  1. Sometimes they don't inform everyone. New Jazz regulations come out every year and it's very difficult to keep up. Older musicians are often deliberately left out of the loop, and before they know it...... it's too late. They're not playing "Jazz" anymore and they only find out about it in the press. That's why "labels" matter, and the key to being a recognized Jazz Musician is to make sure you have your jazz license updated and check in with a certified Jazz parole control officer weekly throughout the year.
  2. Not sure if this has been posted. This came over my wire via Section Manager: Lelia R Garner, WA0UIG wa0uig@arrl.org I regret to inform you that our friend, Bob Heil, K9EID passed away Thursday, Feb 28, 2024 at the age of 83. He presented at the Midwest Convention in 2020 and via Zoom at my local club in the past few years also. Dynamic, interesting, and generous, Bob Heil lived his passion. 73, Bob, from all of us, dit dit From the Heil facebook site: Our beloved founder, Dr. Bob Heil, K9EID, is now a Silent Key. Bob fought a valiant, year-long battle with cancer, and passed peacefully surrounded by his family. Bob’s lifelong passion for amateur radio was clear to everyone involved in the hobby. Everything Bob did for the betterment and growth of amateur radio - from his instructional handbooks and countless presentations to his support of the ARRL and youth programs - was based on the foundation and spirit of service. Bob was an Elmer to all of us. While Bob’s presence will dearly be missed, his impact on the hobby and everyone in it will forever be felt. On behalf of Bob to all ham radio operators worldwide, 73. ARRL has an article in tribute to Bob Heil, K9EID at https://www.arrl.org/news/bob-heil-k9eid-silent-key He was such a legend in multiple areas!!
  3. Now THAT’s awesome! Well, I wouldn't go THAT far: (I'll let people assign the posters to the violations I've identified below) Title is clearly clickbait: "Paul Gilbert Explains His Unique Guitar Technique". In no way is this unique. Every guitarist has a cordless drill around the house and it's a matter of time before they figured this amusing little trick out. Rick is still a crappy educator for exposing this to the public. Boomer. Boomer!! We have a Boomer here!!! Paul appears to be over 50 AND White. Over representation is clearly a violation. Rick Appears to be Flaunting his guitar collection. He should sell his assets to pay for these interview costs rather that asking people to buy his book. Jazzpiano88 is getting very angry!!! Very very angy!!! Camera cuts to Rick showing him laughing; he should NEVER EVER be allowed to be shown on camera in an interview unless he's a famous journalist. That's just my policy and something that makes me kick the dog around if violated -- I get SO annoyed having someone of lowly stature on camera.
  4. This I had not seen before (Paul Gilbert's Drill Technique): PaulGilbertDrill.mp4
  5. One YouTuber who does better jazz interviews (IMO) is Pablo Held. He’s also a wonderful pianist.
  6. Or a new TV network needs a catchy theme: NetworkTheme.mp3
  7. Hit a pedal point C octave in the bass and hit chord F Bb Eb surrounding middle C. Move the chord around chromatically or 4ths
  8. I don't view it that way. The entire world does not know about Beato, and the point of this thread was to point out to us musicians that he's gone mainstream with even the civilians. So mainstream that CNN did a story on him.
  9. If you ever walked by a newsstand, nearly every magazine ever published has some sort of title like this. Heck Electronic Musician, Guitar Player and Keyboard magazines were probably the worst. It's called sales and marketing.
  10. This is an interesting rendition of I Got Plenty O Nuthin:
  11. I’d be satisfied if they made them MIDI record/transmit but not playback. Kind of like what Chick had with his Rhodes in the EB. I would guess that Playback is where most of the cost is anyway for Spirio and ENPRO. Also I think playback is much more of a novelty targeted for users rather than players.
  12. I've binge watched all of the Columbo episodes a couple years ago.
  13. I've got to dig into a Gershwin biography. Facts I had no knowledge of were how he died at such a young age (contrasted with his brother), and the famous anecdotes from Ravel to him: "Why would you want to be a second rate Ravel when you are already a first rate Gershwin? ..... I should be taking lessons from you...."
  14. Here's a good one from The Firm Soundtrack: He's a legitimate monster. You should hear his work on Columbo.
  15. That's kind of the crux of it. In the good ole days, the orderliness of the FCC and Publishing industry meant that you weren't allowed to speak unless you got a broadcast license or wrote a letter to the editor. Those were the days when, if MathofInsects got pissed off from his recliner, his only recourse was to yell at the TV and possibly throw his shoe at it. If he threw his eraser at the chalkboard, no one was there with a video camera to say different. The internet gave us usenet, but that was largely a sewer combined with a dumpster fire. Things went downhill from there. But here we are. Post a thread on Rick and its a flame war about Social Media, click baits, and how the younger crowd is now in charge. Post a thread on Mehldau and it becomes a thread on the Boomer interviewed him who math is upset about. I just said fuck it and nuked mine (What happened to the Brad Mehldau Thread??). Maybe you should too.
  16. Here’s DroptopBroham cancelling Rick Beato for all of the evil he's done: DropTopBottomAngerIssues.mp4
  17. You might enjoy this one. I sure did. Wow!
  18. Speaking of Resignation, this is very cool and has a nice transcript to go along.
  19. That’s funny. It was the other day that I argued with some other guy on my forum about how I never liked the Köln Concert since it always sounded to me like a non-jazz pianist trying to imitate jazz That's very interesting! I'm not a fan of much of that that concert either for an almost reciprocal reason -- it sounds like a jazz pianist trying to improvise bluesy pop. Something Mehldau has managed to successfully pull of and has really perfected.
  20. This is really great! (I skipped much of the intro, which is also nice but I really like the tune).
  21. I could easily see AI doing some jazz tasks successfully. Like “reharmonize Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. It generates the notes.
  22. Highly weird stuff Right up there with Snakefinger.
  23. The Yamaha 9’ CFX and CFX Enpro (disclavier) are at $194.3k and $244.2k msrp, so are up there.
  24. I really like it! It blew my mind when I first played your recording cuz I was called in to play keys for a variety show cover of it when it was first a hit, and memories started to flood back. Can’t remember what I played. I think it was a DX7 and Juno 106. Did ok since it won the competition .
  25. Here’s an excellent book on the subject if you care to find out how it actually works. https://www.deeplearningbook.org
