Any chance of Kawai's wonderful action appearing in a 73 key version for us multi keyboard gigsters?

I'm a big fan of 73-key instruments, however I don't know if the market demand would be sufficient to justify the additional retooling cost for a 73-key MP.

While not really a stage piano per se, it's perhaps worth noting that Yamaha hasn't (yet) announced a 73-key version of the P225 to replace the P-121.

    Kind regards,

    James

One of my favorite concert videos of all time is the single-camera-continuous shot concert Vulfpeck did in Madison Square garden.  *That* is the kind of show that could get me out...no tracks, just great musicians having great fun.  And most of them were switching off playing various instruments....

Yeah, it's a fantastic concert. Those guys are seriously talented musicians, and make everything look so effortless while clearly having immense fun. The audio mix is also amazing!

I remember watching the video for "Running Away" by Joey Dosik a few years ago (when I was less familiar with Vulfpeck), being totally smitten by his velvety, soulful voice...then I realised to myself wait...he's the sax player?! Crazy talent...

This is right out of the Pathfinder speakers into an iPhone 14 standard...

Just to clarify, you're connecting the output from the speakers into the iPhone 14, using a cable yes?
(i.e. we're not hearing the sound of the Pathfinder speakers as recorded by the iPhone 14's built-in mic.)

  4. Nicely played lightbg!  B-3X sounds great too!

Are we hearing the sound of the Pathfinder amp in this video (as picked-up by the iPhone mic), or did you replace the audio with a digital recording from the iPad's DAW?

    Cheers,

  5. I know this isn't a "post your favourites drummers thread", however I've always appreciated the stripped-down drumming on Vulfpeck's recordings - a lot of the time it is just a kick, snare, high-hat, and occasionally a ride.

(or a cowbell, as in this example of "It get funky")

  6. Thanks very much for all your replies and comments guys!

As to whether it really matters if I reproduce the sound of the organ used in these recordings...

Well, the artist Lee Moses did not achieve mainstream success (although his song "Bad Girl" did receive attention after being used in a film a few years ago), so it's doubtful that anyone in the audience who listens to us performing these songs will recognise that they are covers of his particular covers (although some of our funk/soul DJ friends may appreciate the rarity of tunes on our set-list).  Therefore, ultimately it probably does not matter if I use a Vox, Farfisa, Hammond for these songs.

However, on a personal level, I do derive a sense of musical satisfaction in trying to reproduce the vintage sound of the instruments used in these original recordings.  For me, nailing the sound is almost as important as playing the right notes! ;)

    Thanks again guys!

    Cheers,

ps. Here's the "Bad Girl" song mentioned above.  Honestly, how this song along didn't make Lee Moses a star is a mystery...

  7. Hello folks,

The band that I play with is planning to take-on these two Lee Moses covers:

The organ parts in both tunes are not so complicated (I think our drummer will have a much harder time...), however I'd like to nail the sound as closely as possible.
My assumption is that both were performed on a B3.  I think "Reach Out" uses a stopped Leslie, while "Day Tripper" does not use a Leslie at all.

Any other suggestions for how I can reproduce the organ sounds in these tracks on my Electro, please?

Thanks in advance for any comments!

    Cheers,

    James

In the early days of M1 Macs some programs had issues mixing native and intel compiled software. After a year they seem to have most of the issues worked out. I use native whenever possible and mix in Intel when necessary. Native hosts seem to handle the old format much better now then they did when it first came out.

Right, I recall an issue I had in Adobe Premiere whereby an Izotope mouth de-clicker audio plugin I was using in a project would not display the UI correctly when Premiere was running on Apple Silicon.  I needed to set it to use Rosetta in order for the plugin UI to appear.  However, once I had the settings dialed-in as I wanted, I could continue to open the project using Premiere (running on Apple Silicon) and the plug-in itself would continue to work (albeit without being able to open the UI).  Izotope eventually fixed this via a software update.

  9. Looks great, very professional looking job!

Apologies for asking, but this is primarily to disguise the Nord as a more "vintage" instrument, yes?

Presumably, extending the depth is just to allow clearance for the cables, which are all routed through the hole on underside?

Also, can anyone identify the tune playing in the first clip?  Grant Green?

    Cheers,

  10. Really great to see Clavia release a brand new EP sound, even if it's incompatible with my "vintage" Electro 3.

Like Scott, I wasn't terribly enamoured by the sound in the official announcement video, however there are passages of the Bonners clip that I rather like - particularly the dry sound without any extra brightening or effects applied.

A nice addition for owners of newer Nord boards - hopefully I'll have a chance to try it myself in the near future.

    Cheers,

    James

I'm really glad they added the MagSafe jack to free up that second USB-C port.

I have the original M1 Air (16gb).  I was also a little concerned by the limited number of ports.  However, at home and at work I connect it to a 4K display (Dell at home, LG at work) via USB-C cable, which provides power and display in a single cable.  Then if I need to connect any other devices, I can either use the display's USB ports, or plug in a USB-C hub with all the additional ports and card readers etc. I need.

I love my 1st gen M1 Air far more than I expected. At this point, if it was lost or stolen, I'd probably just replace it with the same model. It works great, and the limited number of ports has turned out to be a non-issue for me.

  12. RIP Tina, "the hardest working woman in show business".

This is one of my favourite live performances of all time - her energy is through the roof!

It's up there with James Brown's TAMI show performance the previous year.

Good catch noticing that! I zoomed in on my iPad screen and see what you mean. The first time through my intro you see AudioLayer bypassed, yet it's my New York piano playing, not Pianoteq. This was a post production move. I decided to run the rubato intro twice to compare the pianos in that setting, where I played a little softer and held some notes longer. Since I recorded midi as I filmed, I rendered the song from beginning to end with both pianos and chose appropriately while editing the final video. Starting with the second time through my rubato intro, the iPad screen is accurate to what you're hearing.

Got it, thanks for the explanation.

So am I correct in thinking that (for some passages) we're essentially hearing a (re)rendering of a MIDI file initially recorded while playing a different sound, rather than playing and recording both sounds "live"?

This is probably a minor point, but it could be said that pianists respond to the sound they're hearing and adapt their playing in real-time.  So a MIDI file recorded while playing a sampled VI and then played back using Pianoteq, may not have the same "feeling" as if it was recorded while playing Pianoteq directly.

    Cheers,

    James
