  1. The best I was able to find is the Kurzweil KB76 gig bag from that big store in Wi for $300.  The interior length is 49” but when you use the 2 large extra pads that come with it, that fit perfectly, the PC4-7 fits like a glove. Case is semi-rigid, adequately padded, and has wheels. I just use the keyboard for local gigs and rehearsals so I’ve been satisfied.

  2. Ah…this is how I started when I was 16 back in ‘76. Bought it for…wait…$500! But is was in mint condition with the top and legs with a Leslie 825 for another $300.  Borrowed some of the cash from my dad and paid him back $100/mo until paid off. Started playing gigs almost as soon as I got it. The “good” ole days…

Dennis was doing a lot of solo gigs before the pandemic and you can add him to the list of artists that seem to be retired because of it. He has not done shows at all after it. Boston seems to be another band also done.

Dennis also collaborated and performed with Jim Peterik one several songs before the pandemic. I think the most popular release was “Proof of Heaven.” I believe there’s a video out there somewhere. I’m sure it was easy for them to get together as they live around the corner from each other in the Chicago burbs. One of my daughters went to school with Peterik’s son, Colin, a great musician in his own right, and after they became friends I was privy to some interesting gossip.

Also, I believe De Young released songs in 2020 and 2021 with his latest band. Not sure if they ever performed them publicly.

Dennis must be in his mid-70’s by now, maybe that’s why he hasn’t been touring?

  4. I’ve been going to DPreview almost daily for years, like here.  The practical information and insight gained over a variety of topics in the forums was extremely helpful to me and so many others, much like KC is to us. It was rated as the #1 internet photography site and will be sorely missed by so many. And the fact that over 20 years of shared knowledge will not be saved, as I understand it, is heartbreaking.

  5. Just FWIW, when I did DSB, I combined two different piano patches on my PC3 (don’t remember which ones anymore), slightly altered fine-tuning on each, with a sprinkle of chorus, delay, and reverb IIRC.

Also, split keyboard using two piano patches on the LH (for bass notes) pretty much same as upper split, but one was +octave, and disabled the sustain pedal. Might sound weird, but it sounded better to me - kept the bass noted cleaner, easier to play cleaner when using some sustain on upper part, if that makes sense. Just thought I’d throw that out there in case it might be useful.

  6. My heart goes out to you, your band mates, and all the others in your community. What a tragic, sudden, devastating loss for all of you.  As you can see, this place is a great place to come for comfort, guidance, inspiration, encouragement not only about all things musical, but for life's circumstances, and all that it brings. As you can see, many have offered thoughts and suggestions that are helpful. May you grieve in whatever way and for however long, in your own unique way, and allow and understand others need to do the same. I am hopeful that in whatever time frame, you and your band mates will continue musically and allow yourselves to experience all the good memories to come from that.  Music, and for me, playing out especially, has been a loyal companion and comforter throughout many of life’s difficulties. Best wishes to you and don’t be afraid to come here often. I’m sure we’d all like to hear from you.

Just pickup up the last Yamaha FC 7 they had at my local GC to use with my Nord I just got.

Almost didn't get FC7 the girl at the counter totally ignored me  doing stuff on the computer never said "I'll be with you in a minute" or "I'll get someone to help you" then she just walked off.    I was going to leave but my buddy who buys there all the time was picking up a guitar from repair, so I stopped one of the salespeople on the floor.     We were the only people in the story spending money and they ignore me.   I only bought it from GC because I went there with my buddy, else I'd would of ordered it from Sweetwater.

That’s happened to me more than once at a local GC. Almost makes me wish they worked commission like years ago. I don’t know which is worse!

When buying a used PX-5S check the velocity response on the A# notes. There was a design flaw that caused many to have erratic behavior on A# notes usually on a lower A#. The PX-5S has been in production since at least 2013 and the price for a new one just went up by $100.

I heard the  Bb notes had the same problem. 🤭

After watching all of the Youtube videos and reading this thread, I bought a YC 73 hoping it would be a good fit for me. I have been using a Yamaha CP4 and a Nord Electro 6 73 recently.

    YC first impressions:

The construction of the YC is excellent, the keyboard is quite playable but not quite as nice the CP4 keyboard.

Comparing the YC sounds to the Nord, I found the YC C7 piano fuller and more focused than any piano in the Nord.

The YC Rhodes sample “75rd Funky” edged out the Nord Nefertiti Rhodes in my opinion. I have not yet compared the Wurly and Clavinet sounds.

The YC synth/strings/pads etc are more refined than the Nord samples, with the advantage of being able to adjust resonance.

The YC also has the new pitch bend and modulation levers.

The Nord scroll list/category search is easier than Yamaha's rocker switch to select sounds.

Comparing the Nord organ to the YC organ, the YC has a distinctive tonality when compared to the Nord.

Identical drawbar settings sounded quite different between the two boards. The YC can be adjusted to match the Nord drawbar sound with a little tweaking. With the first 3 drawbars out on the Nord (888), the YC matched the sound with the first 3 drawbars set at 635(ish).

The YC chorus and vibrato is more subdtle than the Nord’s.

The new Leslie effect in the updated YC is nice, about the same, or slightly better than the Nord.

The Nord organ plays better than the YC with the high trigger point keyboard setting.

The effects section is an upgrade from the Nord effects, with the ability to adjust reverb per voice/zone.

Yamaha has copied many of Nords excellent interface ideas such as the lit rotary encoders, assignable controls, and the general intuitive layout. In doing so, they have made a keyboard that many of us have asked for, a compact package with all of the basic sounds and controls needed for gigging.

Nice review!  How would you compare the keybeds for ap and ep?

I’m kind of surprised to see interest in swapping out a Mojo 61 for the updated YC61 - and game to learn what’s appealing to folks about that. Is the new organ that much better than the Mojo? Or are people thinking it’s worth the extra $500 (more if you’re selling a used Mojo) just for the better pianos and the bi-timbral feature? Seems like a lot of dough just for those pieces. That said, these YC boards are very cool…

And I can’t help but wonder how the SK Pro fits in here sound wise. Especially SK Pro vs updated YC.  Any thoughts, first hand comparisons?

  11. This is quite interesting. Many years ago I had the original QSC 10s and was very happy with them. Due to many positive reports here about how good the EV zx-a1’s were for acoustic piano, and my idea of getting smaller/lighter speakers, I bought an EV for comparison.  I was not impressed at all with it. Not even close the the QSC’s. Also, I had some problem with cutting out, buzz, etc, can’t remember exactly, but an internet search revealed this was a common issue, and I returned it. Maybe be got a bad one?

I had retired from doing gigs in 2010 after well over 30 yrs of playing out and shortly after sold my QSC’s. Fast forward to about 3 years ago I got the itch to gig again. Due to so many positive reviews, I purchased the 8.2s. To my ears they sound harsher and with less definition than my memory of the 10s. Also, even in some moderately loud rehearsals the 8.2s are getting warm with reduced output. Not reliable. The old 10s were rock solid for years.

A bit OT, but I’ve noticed as I have gotten older, I swear I hear sounds differently on different days. Some days things (organ, piano, synth) just don’t sound the same. Makes doing comparison tests difficult. Getting old sucks…

But looking forward to your comparison though!

  12. I play quieter and quieter (until in extreme cases I stop playing at all) and see if the other musicians (usual suspect, the guitarist) follow me, or just keep on shredding at full blast. If I'm feeling snarky, I tell them "did you notice I stopped playing? Are you even listening to what the other band members are doing?"

Gawd, that reminds me of the last open-stage jam session I ever participated in.

We had a pretty nice jam going â nothing special, but pleasant enough â when this guitar player came up, set up his amp, and started playing. Way too loud. And just never stopped. I played less and less. Eventually just stopped. Then I picked up my drink and walked off stage. I don't think he even noticed.

My friend, a (super attentive) guitar player who had brought me along, still tells me how much he loved that I just wordlessly walked off.

WHOA...wait...hold on...the GUITARIST was playing way too LOUD?!?!?!?

    ð¤£ððð¤ª

One big reason I"m not too hip on open jams. I"m just so past that now. Love the way you handled itðð»

Back on topic, that Neville Bros tune was the dope!!

  13. I was probably about 8-9 when I figured out the song More. Parents bought a new Wurlitzer organ from the Wurlitzer store in a nearby mall when I was 8 years old and my older sister and I started lessons right away. They often had a kid maybe 12 years old that played the fancy Wurlitzer on a turn style in the mall during busy times. He wasn"t reading music - played everything by ear. Inspired by that I was able to play More by ear. Can still hear it in my mind with a Latin rhythm. Something about that song back in the day that just hooked me. Wish I could have continued to develop my ear. Alas, not so much...
  14. WHOA.......!!!!! Man did these take me back in a flash! Same age, graduated HS in '78. I had already started playing that dance stuff, funk, disco, whatever got 'em up and dancing. Man do I miss those times, so simple, so fun. While I was playing weddings and dance clubs starting at age 17, I couldn"t get enough of Kansas, Boston, REO, Styx, Chicago, etc...etc....MAN do I miss those times! I haven"t said 'man' so much since....well... the 70"s!
