Nah I had the modx8 before and didn’t like the GhS action. I played the CK88 a few weeks ago and same dislike for the action.

I see, I once had the Mod8 as well, for one afternoon lol, and send it back due to the GHS action, but somehow the GHS on the CK88 seems to work for me. Albeit after heavy adjusting the velocity offset & depth and some other things. I didn‘t love it at first , thats for sure.

Not sure yet what I’ll get to replace it. I’m missing the 88 notes especially when doing musical theatre gigs. I’m also looking at rehauling my setup over the summer. Maybe going software (iPad or laptop) so maybe a P125 as a controller with a nanokontrol? Or a Casio PX as I liked the action on those but don’t like the touchscreen interface. We’ll see.

How about the CK88? Sold my CP88 and got one of these. I‘m happy.

I typically play two keyboards in my home setup.  Sometimes a friend will play acoustic guitar and sing.  Also might want to plug in a laptop with drum tracks. Maximum of 8-10 tracks.  This is NOT professional, just having fun.  People come over and listen and often say at the end "I wish I could have a recording of what you guys just played."

So I bought a QSC Touchmix 12.  Honestly, it's a pain in the ass.  I keep running into situations where the recording functionality stops working, long story.

I want a mixer that will easily record to an SD card or USB hard drive.  It would be nice if it had onboard reverb.

    Any suggestions?

P.S. these are home worship-oriented sessions, keys, ambient, kind of like unplugged sets only with keyboards

I highly recommend the Zoom Livetrak series. I personally use the L-12, it works flawlessly, live and in the studio, great sounding mic preamps, low noise, nice enough fx, genius routing options for headphones mixes and so on, great working audio interface (using it with Logic) and last but not least, easy to use sd-recorder.

I have the 61 and I’d seriously like to have the 88 as well. That way I could pick the best keyboard for the gig at hand.
Any CP4 owners tried the 88? I’d love to see a comparison.

Yup, I own and play both the CP4 and the CK88, I wouldn‘t want to compare them though, since the CK is definitely another animal. While the CP4 is the elegant and exquisite feeling instrument, whose sounds imo still kick ass after all these years, the CK, while not that good sounding, is much more convenient, lighter & much better UI (another planet really) . I personally found the key / sound connection on the CK a bit disappointing at first, but after some adjusting the depth/offset parameters, compressor and effects  I now feel I can play a lot more expressively. Same goes for the  EP sounds, you really have to dig in and adjust the parameters to get the most out of the sounds, since I feel they don’t react at their full potential right out of the box, due to the GHS keyboard.

    But yeah, a really nice instrument, I‘d love a 73 version…

I think the biggest attractions are-- it's something "new", the action was tighter then my 7 year old CP4 and I felt the newer CFX would be more present in a live context.

Thanks for your answer. I hear you. In retrospective, I was blinded by the shiny new UI. Yeah, a bad case of GAS, I tried to gloss over the things I hated making heavy use of the Master-EQ and even buying a new monitor (Yamaha DXR10, which I love BTW, so there's at least something positive lol) , but in the end, I had to admit to myself, the CP88 is a whole different animal and maybe not the right one for me. In the CP4, there's warmth, there's âlife', there's more of everything. Absolutely NO comparison. And I'm not, only talking about the SCM-AP sounds, although still my 1st concern.

My mistake was to let go of the CP4, so my advice would be to try to keep them both for a while, if you should give in to your GAS for the CP88.

    I'd like,to try a P515 someday, but right now I'm looking for a CP4 in good conditionâ¦

  6. I like the CP88 and will probably get one if I can sell the CP4. As usual, I'm a year to two years behind the curve of everyone else in getting it..

Wow, Dave, what happened? I thought you'd keep your CP4⦠funny thing, I'm looking for an used CP4 right now and trying to sell my 2019 CP88. It was a mistake, I had to admit it, I hate its piano soundsâ¦

  7. Even if I do end up purchasing a CP 73/88,( came close even just last week, the deal went to a local buyer), I am still keeping my CP4.

A wise thing to do. I wish I did. After listening again to some CP4 AP sounds, see below, I decided to look for an used one. It definitely is no comparison - again, FOR ME and my kind of music - it's a matter of taste, but I like the SCM-Sounds and the other sounds (Acoustic Bass, Pads, Strings, Synths ) a LOT more. I wish Yamaha didn't ditch the SCM-technology.

I guess I was a bit blinded by the modern UI and forgot to really really listen to the damn thing. ;) I don't know if I'll be keeping both the CP88 and the CP4, we'll see, but first I gotta find an used CP4, they seem very rare where I live. I thought about texting the guy who bought my CP4 :))

  8. Hi,

as a long time user of the previous model, the CP4, I partly regret selling it in favor of the CP88. Had them side by side for a couple months autumn 2019 and got my share of impressions from fellow musicians. Almost unanimously pro CP4, which is how I still feel, as well. At least in terms of the Grand Piano sounds.

Please, don't get me wrong, I like imy CP88 enough to keep it, mostly for the new UI and the capability to somewhat tweak the sounds to my liking. I miss the warmth and the plethora of better sounds the CP4 offered. Not only the APs, the basses (especially the Upright bass) and Pads in the CP4 were a lot better, IMO. I also liked the EPs more, at least I don't thinks there's a huge difference - not that they're bad in the CP88, they're definitely good and I enjoy the FX, in particular DRIVE and analog Delay a lot, but still, no huge reason to sell the CP4 if you own one.

So I guess sound-wise there isn't really a ton of progress since 2014, you have to listen to and play it for yourself.

Oh, and yes, the Nashville C3 is quite nice though, one of the better APs. I mostly like the CFX, the C7 and Nashville, hate the Bösendorfer. I had to tweak the Nashville and the CFX but I like the results for some situations. Oh yeah, and the Uprights are nice, indeed.

  9. Still,Yamaha should use standard sized keys on this thing.

Bad Mister @ YamahaSynth: â The new YC61 has neither a piano action, nor does it have an action like the MX61.

Also, contrary to Internet conspiracies, there is no 'standard piano key width".'

I like the idea of homeschooling. Pity it's forbidden by law in my country of residence....

  11. Hey guys, yesterday I received the MODX8 from Thomann and, for the first time ever, I returned something on the same day.

Absolutely hated the action, at first I actually thought there must be something wrong with the settings, but...

I did expect something of lower quality than my CP4, of course, but it is unacceptable for me; even after setting the velocity curve to soft I wasnt able to bring out single notes in my chords and such things, the samples just didnt come to life like it sounded when pressing the audition button. Its also very unpleasant and heavy to play deeper or higher on the keys.

Im very dissapointed because I really really wanted to like it.
