  1. For me not so much songs as techniques. Always wanted to play New Orlean's style licks. Found some Professor Longhair tutorial vids with transcriptions on YouTube and given my proficiency it will keep me out of trouble for a while. Also want to learn some standards ("Fly Me To the Moon", "All of Me" ) with walking basslines for my duo act (great female vocalist, and the upbeat songs will perk the act up). Trying to talk my cover band into doing "Kid Charlemagne" as a stretch project to show off.

     

    Cool. Kid Charlemagne would be fun to play.

    Yeah, I understand that. I was more thinking of one particular song that you'd like to play but have put it off for some reason. I've got others I want to play too, but none of them are like Your Song...one of my favorite songs and has been since I first heard it in the 70s, yet I never sat down to learn to play it (didn't take too long even with a ton of chord changes, but still, I avoided it for some reason).

    Not sure what drove me to finally do it. Several years ago someone covered the song and in my opinion bastardized it by changing the word "while" (from "while you're in the world") to "now".

    'Now'? GASP - blasphemy! Glad you are doing your part to right the universe.

     

    Yeah, changing that word is akin to blasphemy (I'll accept your word). One of the best songs ever written, and someone decides to change a word? Nah. Bad form.

    Why not sweat pants? Or "track pants"? Or, go to a running store and get some running tights (I have never had those, but I'm old school and just wear sweats).

  6. Haven't been here in a while.

     

    My running is still on hold. Had some knee surgery and now having some calf and back issues that I am getting treatment for.

     

    My kids are still runners. Daughter runs in college and ran a 5k CC time of 19:21 this fall. HS sophomore son dropped his 5k down to 15:32. He won't turn 16 until after the school year is over, so I think he has some big upside still. He is looking to run a 3200 on the track in under 9:20 in the spring, and I think that's reasonable; he went 9:45 last year as a freshman on less training and a year younger.

     

    I am hopeful that I can begin the New Year with some running, but right now I can not walk without pain, so I need to fix that first.

  7. Stepay, glad to hear your kids are running - fast!

     

    Looks like we might have a running family too, eventually. My wife started clicking off 4 and 5 milers with me on our trail this fall with little to no training. I was really impressed, granted she was in the Junior Olympics for hurtle in H.S. but that was 25 years ago. She slows me down, but I am cool with that and it is a great way to spend time together. And actually the slower pace allows us to chat (for a change, we have three kids!). She is fantastic shape and younger than me though, so eventually I'll be the slow one.

     

    She is also heavy into karate (black belt likely next year) and I am getting a bunch of dojo people to do a 10K in March called the Run From Winter 10K.

     

    My son did a 5K with dojo people, he's 9 and he "won" he says, but man he was wiped out after that!

     

    So hopefully we will have a running family too after everything shakes out!

    Cool. My experience tells me that those who LOVE running tend to do the best. I've seen a couple of very talented kids in the past who didn't like running and just didn't really improve.

     

    My running is on the shelf for now, but I'm enjoying seeing the kids run and especially the progress of my son (only because he's the one with the crazy improvement for now...my daughter already had her breakout season). He ran 5:28 for his PR for the mile on the track in 8th grade and then this fall as a freshman he managed 3.1 miles at 5:16 pace. I'm still a bit shocked. He drops another minute from that time in 4 years, and he's going to get some serious college money from someone. His goal is 15:30 next fall, and then he says he wants to run in the 14s before he graduates. Lofty goal, but time will tell. Not unreasonable for next year with the 15:30 goal. In May after the track season, he ran a 5k and ran 18:52. He then trained all summer with the HS team (new level of training...more mileage, etc.) and begins the season with a 17:47 and then finishes with the 16:25. Now, with the training for indoor, he's up to an 11-mile run, and he plans to get to 65 miles per week in two weeks. Best thing is that he is loving it more than I ever thought he would. He's had three progressively bigger weeks, so I told him he HAS to step it back next week. Gotta make sure injuries don't creep in.

  8. Bumping up this topic to crow a little bit as a parent of two high school runners.

     

    My daughter continued her ways of running in the 19s for 5k as a high school senior this past cross country season (and she will run in college beginning next fall), and my 14-year-old freshman son ran 16:25 for 5k during the season. I was a very good high school runner, and I didn't run faster than 16:25 until I was a senior, and I was 18 then while he will still be just 17 until after he graduates. He doesn't even shave yet. I thought he MIGHT get into the 17s, but he ran in the 16s 3 times at the end of the season, getting down to that 16:25. Should be room to improve as he matures.

    I am on my winter 5K-A-Day treadmill regimen, with an occasional 5 miler on the trail on the weekend, weather permitting.

     

    I'm envious. I can't even do my elliptical trainer with this silly knee injury...I've never had a knee injury ever. Fortunately it's not exactly the knee, but a ligament alongside the knee...it's slowly getting better, but I could see waiting until the new year before running again.

    Update. My daughter got her 5,000 time down to 19:26 and helped her team qualify for the state championships for the first time for her high school in 7 years. She's either 3rd or 4th on her team depending on the week, so it's a VERY strong team. The top 7 all broke 20 minutes at least once during the season, and one girl got down to 18:44.

     

    I last ran on Labor Day and injured my knee which is still healing.

  11. I've had moments in my life when I think Elton John's Levon is just about the best song ever written, and I'm in another one of those moments, so over the past week or so I've been listening to as many versions of him playing Levon that I can find.

  12. Hey all, just a quick update. I did the Ottawa half marathon last week, and ran 1:44:21, and am super happy. I could have gone faster, but it was nice to finish in relative comfort, and have my legs heal quickly.

     

    Part of the reason I eased up on the race pace is that I have registered for a few different types of races this year. On May 18th I did a VERY short triathlon. It's called a try-a-tri, and intended for people who have never done a triathlon before. I probably should have gone up a distance level, as I finished 2nd overall out of 250 people. Anyway, it did the trick, and I am very interested in doing more. I have one (a longer one) coming up next week.

     

    I am also going to do a spartan sprint race the following week. Basically a 5k race for idiots that want to climb walls, run up ski hills, and crawl through mud, and lift cinder blocks, and throw spears, etc... while they run 5k :).

    This thread needs a bump, and I'll do so with my kids' running stories.

     

    The last time I mentioned them, my daughter had run 22:06 for her PR as a sophomore in HS (5k) and my son had just finished a successful 7th grade season despite having mild asthma (which has now been cured with the removal of his appendix! - I have another thread on that). So, here are their updates:

     

    My daughter (now a HS junior) qualified for the regional track meet in the spring (when still a sophomore) by running the 1600 meters (9 meters short of a mile) in 5:23...up from her PR as a freshman of 6:16, so quite an improvement. So far this year in cross country (5k), she has lowered her PR to 21:05, and she has adjusted her goal of 20:something to 19:something by the end of the year. They run on a famously fast and flat course on Saturday, so her goal could be realized then.

     

    My 8th-grade son lowered his 2-mile cross country PR to 12:10 on a difficult course on Saturday to finish first for his team for the first time ever. He then had his appendix attack on Monday night and had it out at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, eliminating his breathing problems completely. His goal by the end of the season is to break the school record of 11:25. Hopefully he will have enough time to get back into the running and make that happen. Doc says he can start running again on Wednesday if he has no pain, so that should be enough time.

     

    I currently have a KNEE injury to go along with my chronic calf problems and have not run since Labor Day. I'd rather see the kids continue to improve though.

     

    Well, my daughter lowered her 5,000 time to 20:18, so she's pretty happy about that. Time to break 20 now!

  13. Stepay, hope the knee heals quickly. How did you injure it. Is it a running related injury. Sorry if you posted about it in an earlier and I missed reading it. (I'm training for a few upcoming events myself, just curious)

     

    I went for a run on Labor Day with my daughter as school was out and she needed to run that day even though the cross country team wasn't meeting that day. My knee (inside of the knee) started hurting so that I was limping the next morning. It has SLOWLY gotten better since, but it's not good enough to run on yet.

    Good for them! You obviously set a good example for them.

     

    My modest goal of 600 miles for the year is in sight. I have ~ 70 miles to go. I was sitting pretty until the storm, and that cost me 14 days. :mad::)

    Thanks! I've tried my best to stay out of it so that they would come to running (if they ever did) on their own, so they did soccer and both did gymnastics (my son DID take to gymnastics though and has progressed now to just trampoline and diving, but my daughter did not like gymnastics). Both of them now love running. It has been awesome for me to see.

     

    Get those 70 miles in! :)

     

  16. I'm proud to report that I completed my very first half marathon on November 10th with a time of 1:43. When I started training, I hoped to beat 2:00 and I was pleasantly surprised.

     

    Very nice. I know a couple of guys who have been running for 20+ years and train for a specific half marathon every spring who have never run that fast. Time to try now to get in the 1:30s! Congrats.

  17. I'm going resurrect this thread to brag a bit about my running kids.

     

    My son ran in his first CC season ever as a 7th grader, and he ended up being the best 7th grade distance runner in our very large school district and the 3rd best overall runner in our middle schools (two 8th graders were better than him). They run 2 miles in middle school which is a little short for him, so I let him run a 5k right after the season, and he finished 2nd overall in 19:51. Not bad for a 12-year-old kid who still looks like he's 10. He's already saying he wants to run in the 16s as a freshman in high school...that's a doable goal for him I think depending on what puberty does for him.

     

    My daughter is in 10th grade and lettered in cross country as a freshman but started the season with severe tendonitis and had to wear a boot and missed half the season. She came back strong and progressed from a 28:24 5k in her first meet (not very well trained) all the way down to her new PR of 22:06, earning her second letter in the process. Her goal for next season is to be injury free and get into the 20s.

  18. Didn't dig through the whole thread but has anyone mentioned Newton running shoes? They have a drop off at the end of the toe to basically force you to run with a mid foot strike instead of a toe or heel strike. It's supposed to be a more natural way to run and will supposedly keep you more injury free. Plus, they look really funky and cool!

     

    I know ONE person who really loves those shoes, and I know many more who are VERY skeptical about them. I'm not a huge proponent of trying to drastically change your gait unless you are constantly getting injured. If injuries are a problem, then orthotics are a possibility along with some strengthening of the weaker muscles, but consciously and drastically changing your natural gait seems problematic to me. For some people those shoes would force a drastic change...for others, not so much. Guess you could try them out and see if you like them.

  19. Yeah, the 10,000 was crazy. Awesome to see Galen Rupp get that silver. The 1500 was equally as exciting with American Leo Manzano also getting the silver in an amazing sprint finish.

     

    As for me, I've been running 5 days a week now for a month, so that's amazing. I take my son to his cross country practice and then go for a run myself and then wait for them to finish (I don't run with them...I ran on a trail that they don't run on...wouldn't be such a meddling parent).

     

    My 7th grade son is really responding well to daily training, something he's never done. He has a 5k PR of 21:31 from May when he wasn't really training for running, and this Saturday he's running in a 5k that the high school team puts on before the season starts (his sister is a sophomore and runs on the high school team, and family members are allowed to run in this 5,000 meter run on Saturday; unfortunately, my daughter won't be able to run as she's in a boot with tendonitis). He says his goal is 19:something, but that may be a bit too much to hope for. We will see on Saturday.

    That said, it's been CRAZY hot here, and humid. Nice days to have a pool, but not so much for running

     

    Yeah...crazy hot here too. I'm the head coach and co-director of a summer youth track program, and last night they had to run in temps around 91 degrees or so (that's about 35 degrees for you!). They were pretty hot.
