  1. It all sounds fascinating but I started wondering whether the current taste for ultra smooth long-tail reverb algorithms (without becoming a mess), which also includes subtle pitch modulation, an inherent signature of the latest decade, is the actual ingredient that makes all current synth demos what they are, rather than the dry synth signal.

For example, I first heard Domi via the Spectrasonics video on their site. Jesus was via his early videos at Nord booth NAMM.

You’re probably right. I follow both Spectrasonics and Nord and maybe it’s how I got to these guys too. I’m sure about Molina, I first heard him through Nord videos. Only not sure about Domi. I think that I first found her in a video where she’s sight reading Cory Henry’s Lingus solo.

In truth, these days I mostly watch Youtube vids about science, politics, police body cameras, history, and guys pouring concrete.   With the occasional music video thrown in for good measure 🙂

Well, I, on the other hand, overfed with YT and made a New Year’s resolution (on this forum!) to stop watching YT mindlessly. And I did! I open only occasionally links sent to me or search for something specific to share. But browsing for hours - absolutely no! So, maybe you just beat me to it with a few years 😀 Now, just wait me sharing something in a few years and some guy nagging me about how come I missed it 🤣

  4. Sorry, didn’t mean to be disrespectful. I was genuinely interested in how it’s possible to miss these two, they’re all over YouTube, along with Jacob Collier, Snarky Puppy, etc. But maybe it was just me targeted by the YouTube algorithms and those musicians are “all over” my YT only.

Yes I listen to a lot of jazz music, but mostly stuff that I already know about.   I don't spend my time on Youtube looking for new acts that I don't know about.

    I guess that explains it.

Just out of curiosity, how old are you?

    44, why? 🙂

  6. Used to follow him in the past. But I quickly grew tired of what’s rather a permanent display of fast chops.

He was really overweight and balding. Then he disappeared from the online world for a while and got back very slim, fit and with hair 😎 He married a nice girl, a singer, and they used to post some great videos together. I remember one where he was sitting on the floor with crossed legs and would press the sustain pedal of his Nord with the side of his left foot as though he had done it his whole life. It was very impressive! A few months later those videos disappeared and I think I read the marriage didn’t last long… 😕 I think I saw him gaining weight again but he seems pretty much in shape now.

P.S. Ohh, the videos with his (ex?) wife are there again. Maybe it was all fake rumors after all? Hopefully that’s the case. Here’s the one I meant:

What makes "Black Hole Sun" and a lot of other songs of this era so great was that it was just a bunch of guys with guitars putting chords in a row, because they didn't know not to. I'm here for it. I think it expanded music for awhile.

I wanted to say something along the same lines, very well said 👍🏻

With that said, I don't see (hear) much Bach-ish counterpoint in this song

I meant the song’s most typical and recognizable features come from the horizontal movement of notes and simultaneous interaction between the two guitars. Almost like counterpoint. In Bach you can find that the counterpoint implies or outlines chords but once you play the chords (similar to what you did with the chords in Black Hole Sun), it just sounds entirely different and to me that means “non-chordal”. It doesn’t resemble Bach but rather relies on similar principles.

    The chords are beyond obvious to my ears: I6 - bIII6 - bVII - VI5 - bVI - Vsus4 - I6 - I/bVII - bII.

Well, you can devise those chords and they are obvious by the notes that are used but once again, if you play those chords it sounds like a different song to me. But it can be a subjective thing too. This song is really one of my favorites and I’m not a huge fan of synthetically transforming it into chords and scales for the sake of it, if it won’t convey the original aura of the song. But then, I’m contradicting myself too, wanting to “jam” over it. It’s not a jammable song, unless you want to completely turn it into something else 😞

  9. @AROIOS I’m not sure that makes it recognizable. The issue is not that your chords are wrong but rather, the original song is not a chordal song. It relies on a horizontal movement, almost like Bach’s counterpoint, and not on jazz-like chord extensions. Besides, there’s not a single ii-V-I turnaround or something like that, and the guys I had been playing with at the time (including me) - we were not advanced jazz players and even such chordal reinterpretation would still make it almost as difficult as asking us jam over the Coltrane changes 😀

If you like that style of "that chord shouldn't really go there...should it?" pop/rock writing, check out Chris Cornell's Euphoria Morning album.

Ohh, that song is great! Not sure how I’ve missed that album but I guess I haven’t stepped out of Soundgarden and Audioslave. Chris Cornell is an absolute gem and so very unorthodox! Thanks for the recommendation 👍🏻

  11. Black Hole Sun is one of my favorite rock songs and I can write tons of praises, including giving me solace after a painful breakup many years ago (yeah, contrary to all logic) but I’ve always struggled with its harmony. I even remember how I suggested it for jamming with a band I played in and the guitarist said something along the lines of: I like it but for the life of me I can’t make sense of its chords, nor I know what to play over it 😕 Hard to admit that I feel the same way, despite being pretty comfortable with music theory and harmony.

I just found a recent article that has some interesting stuff.

Something that is easy to learn/not overly complicated

This is a personal thing and you will get varying opinions but to me personally all workstations are overly complicated. I’m a software engineer, so it’s odd that I have difficulties with them, but I still find the workstations difficult to use, at least compared to a computer with a DAW.

  13. Now for something (Nothing) serious.

This company has a pretty cool smartphone (Android based but one of the founders is a former Apple VP) and different earbuds. I personally use the Nothing Ear Stick for conf calls at work with my Mac and all people say my voice is very clear and ask me what headset I have.

I’m an Apple guy, but if I had to switch to a non-Apple device, the Nothing Phone would be my first choice.

  14. Synths are like cars. You can get from A to B in any car but people still buy expensive cars 😎 I’ve dreamt of owning an Alfa Romeo since I was a kid. But I could never justify one. Well, last year I said f*ck it, and I bought my first Alfa and I’ve been feeling like a child in a candy store ever since 🧸 Yeah, it’s just a car but it makes me feel good! And I toned down my stance towards expensive synths too. Let people buy expensive synths if that would make them feel good! Life is short, I can be yet another cancer victim tomorrow… I’d rather spend my life enjoying rather than killjoying myself.
