  1. Easy, Kurzweil "Triple-Strike" anyone? To me they sound much better played with a weighted action.

+1! and some actions sound better than others. My PC3K8 sounds incredible when using the Casio PX-5S as a controller, arguably one of the best pianos I've ever played. Did not get the same result using the SV1(which I sold today).

  2. This is absolutely the most entertaining thread ever on this forum!!!!

It is soooo funny to see the fans protecting and the haters hating. I have seen it before, but I think this one tops all. The best part is that both perspectives from the "Hip Elite" haters to the "don't make fun of my new keyboard" fan boys provide the balance that is needed when folks are evaluating such a board. It would be a shame to silence either side of this polarizing dialogue.

Yes. I think it's healthy this kind of dialog happens as we consumers should be critical about products that are offered or the other way around. There's no need to try to hush down either side. Most readers are intelligent to filter our the noise, anyway, so there's no need to baby sit in this forum.

Honest opinion of a product is always welcome and your opinion of this product is already well documented. It crossed the line of healthy dialogue quite a few pages back and into the category of extremely obnoxious!!

  3. I have to make this walk with my rig periodically, because that's just gigging life in the French Quarter.

I know that walk. Played the Quarter for a few years including 2 at the Cajun Cabin. The worst part was making that walk carrying gear at 3 am. I was lucky I was never robbed, but my car was broken into a few times. Had to leave that life behind me as I knew my days were numbered.

  4. I don't know whether or not the Casio is a better controller, I only know that the organ sucks so bad that I wouldn't want to use it, even in an emergency. My point is that the VR-09 is so inexpensive that you could use it as a controller and have a good quality drawbar organ for emergencies.. There may be other options but none with a drawbar organ that I would be satisfied to play for under $1000 (certainly not new, used there are lots of options but not new). Again, excellent sounding drawbar organ new for under a grand, and it has lots of uses!

"Does anyone know how well the XW-P1 works as a midi controller for VB3? My WK-7500 can only control VB3 with keys and the footpedal as it only has USB out (unless I'm doing something wrong). Can the XW-P1 drawbars sliders be assigned to the VB3 drawbars and percussion and CV controls be assigned to any buttons? IIRC the XW-P1 does not have an expression pedal input?

Works great. Just put it in organ mode and the sliders transmit standard CC's. even the knobs can be assigned, front panel switches for percussion and rotary and more."

It is a better controller for half the price!!

  5. The organ on the XW-P1 completely sucks.. on the other hand the VR-09 organ is very good. If you're at all fussy about your organ sound, you wouldn't want to use the casio organ.

I'm commenting on your suggestion using the VR-09 as a controller, in which case the sound of the organ doesn't matter.

The XW-P1 is a better controller for half the price. The internal sounds are only for emergencies.

  6. If or when you ever transition to a vst based gig rig, by using a VR-09 as the controller you have sounds available in the VR-09 in case your rig goes down.... And the VR-09 is only marginally more expensive than a good quality controller..

Then why not just get a XW-P1? It's cheaper, keybed is just as good(or bad), a better controller, and has built in sounds in case the rig goes down.

  7. , but still looking for a DP and EP fix...hmmm PX5 or SV1? Gotta get to those other threads.

Unfortunately neither is the perfect answer.

    For EP's the SV1.

For AP's, weight, and a great keybed the PX-5S.

Just want to revise this since some new PX-5S Stage Settings have been released. The Rhodes in the PX-5S are pretty stellar and worth serious consideration.

  8. Quick update on using my VR-09 in conjunction with a secondary keyboard controller, my Yamaha KX8 (88 note weighted action controller).

Initially, I had something quirky happen when I first connected everything.. my settings for controllers got messed up.. so instead of my expression pedal controlling expression all of a sudden it was turning rotary on/off, and one of the other controllers was changed too.. not sure what happened but I had a flakey sustain pedal plugged into the controller and once I disconnected that and reset the controllers, I've had no problems since.

First thing I tried was the external controller using Midi mode 2 which is the mode I've been using to allow me to connect to the iPad editor (but this was NOT the dedicated KEYBOARD Mode).. and everything worked fine. When playing an organ I could access the lower manual by setting my external controller to midi channel 3, and access the bass pedals on midi channel 2.. Interesting that when playing the organ on the 88 note controller, I had organ tones across all 88 notes, well beyond the normal 61 note limits of an organ keyboard.. all 88 notes responded with what I assume are appropriate hammond tones.. one other interesting point.. you can still split the keyboard on the VR-09.. so you can have the external controller playing bass pedals the lower half of the VR09 playing the lower manual of the organ, and the upper half of the VR-09 playing the upper manual part.. So you can actually access 3 different drawbar settings. That said, as far as I can see, the only way to adjust the bass pedals drawbars is using the iPad app.. I could be mistaken but I see nowhere in the VR-09 menu to adjust the pedals (has anyone else tried this?)

When I split an organ/piano, everything worked perfectly as well.. by selecting organ first and piano second, the piano automatically appears on the external controller, as you would expect AND I have to say that it's quite a nice piano, once you start playing it with an 88 note weighted action (not surprising I suppose).

I also tried the external controller in Midi mode = KEYBOARD, and it worked fine there as well, so it doesn't really matter which mode you use (mode 2 or Keyboard mode) for the purpose of simply connecting an external keyboard.

Bottom line.. the VR-09 seems to support the external keyboard fine and I have not encountered any problems.. So if anyone is planning on using the VR-09 with a second keyboard/controller I don't forsee any problems based on a quick test this morning.

By the way, when hooking up the external keyboard you use splits rather than layers.. layers seems to mix things up.. upper sound appears on the lower keyboard by itself and both the layered sounds appear on the VR-09 itself.. So stick with "Splits" rather than layers.

Did you happen to try the EP's with the weighted 88 controller? Were they any better?

  9. If they fix the expression pedal thing, I'd buy one today. If they don't, I still might eventually buy one, but it wouldn't be an easy decision.

It's a $999 keyboard, I see it as almost "disposable" at this price point.. The idea that I can get a good quality drawbar organ, a virtual analog synth and some pretty good set of samples that covers everything from a reasonably good acoustic piano/EP/Clavs to strings and almost everything you might need to cover gig in a 12 pound package for $999, makes this a no brainer.. Even if it's just for rehearsals, or back up in case I have a problem with my Kronos or Mojo.

I wouldn't argue with that for a minute. My agenda just happens to be different. I'm doing much more solo piano and much fewer band gigs than I used to, with no prospect of that changing anytime soon. (I'd be happy not to do any band gigs at all, but I keep getting calls.) So my next move will probably be to get rid of the Kronos and the SK1 and instead go with something like the VR-09. But since it's going to be my primary gigging keyboard, it's got to check a few essential boxes.

As for the action, I think it's pretty bad for piano, but much more in the useable realm for organ and synth.

If you're mainly playing solo piano why would you consider the VR-09 instead of something like a PX-5S?

  10. Hi guys,

My first post here but I´ve followed this thread for a while. Here in Sweden or Northern Europe the VR-09 has been delayed but I got my hands on one of the first ex in Sweden and have been playing around with it for a week now and I think it´s quite good value for the buck. I made some samples of how it sounds here if anybody is interested.

The Leslie SIM isn´t as good as my ventilator but it works in a mix. I don´t have my Vent at home but will try it out with my band next week. I love the idea of having just one lightweighted keyboard to drag to the rehersals.

    Cheers

    Anders

    Nice demo. Thanks!

  11. I've had the PX-5S little over week now. I'm enjoying it as much or more than I did my SV1. The acoustic pianos are MUCH better as is the action. I actually like the pianos better than my Kronos as they are much more acoustic as not as digital as the Korg.

Interesting. I am not a big fan of the Kronos acoustic pianos, but I did like them better than the previous generation Casio (i.e. PX3/PX330).

Out of the box one could easily argue that the Kronos pianos would be better. But I've been able to tweak the PX-5S so that I can get a piano almost identical to Galaxy Vintage D, something I can't even come close to with the Kronos.

  12. I'm considering the VR-09 to go with PX-5S for a lightweight rig.

There are new EP's coming out for in a couple of weeks that I've been privileged to hear some of them and they are VERY good.

The 24 lbs that it weighs is a major bonus because I would seriously buying this board if it weighed the same as a SV1 on the action and AP's alone.

  13. I thought the XW-P1 keybed was much better than the Krome 61. As far as feeling cheap, I thought the build quality was actually pretty good considering price, weight and materials. Casio had a chance to hit it out of the park with the XW-P1. They could have charged a little more with better pianos and organ and have a much more appealing product.
