  1. hi myles

i have two of the new epi valve jr heads

playing through an ernie ball volumn/pan pedal which allows me either amp or combinations of the two depending on pedal position

the clean amp has g.t. 12au7-y/el84-s #8 hardness

the dirty amp has g.t. 12ax7-c/el84-s #2 hardness

they are each playing through identical 90w mesa black shadows (4x12 cab rewired as 2 2x12 speaker sets 16ohm)

my question: with the dirty amp set at say 9 oclock on the volumn knob, the clean amp must be set at 12 oclock to achieve the same room volumn

both amps are totally quiet, hum wise, when i'm not playing so i feel both are in good condition

what in your oppinion is the reason for this difference in volumn at a given volumn knob position

i really like this rig especially in light of the modest cost (2kids in college)

but am most curious about this

thank you much for any insight

    ray

  2. hi again myles

first of all my appologies...i misspelled your name in my previous post...i am red faced

erichkopp's question is the flip side of mine

the 12ay7 is the preamp tube?

what would you use for a power tube as well for more headroom

  3. hi miles

i've just purchased the epi valve jr head which i'm quite pleased with at this point considering the modest price

i'm strictly an at home player & even at 5w the volumn is excessive for my playing situation when i get it boosted to get the crunch i want which is usually between 12 & 2oclock on the volumn

musicians friend is just a few minutes away from me & are a groove tubes outlet

in the el84 which hardness would you recomend i start with to get this gain at around 9oclock on the dial

am also planning on getting the chinese 12ax7 for it which they advertise as being very musical

i am mostly playing an epi dot studio through this amp into a mesa 4x12 cab w/celestion 90w ceramics

i don't think this is the speaker set i ultimately want for what i'm trying to do...but one thing at a time

looking for the gritty progressive blues sound

    thanks for the info

    here's my plan

    to systematically go through

this amp & upgrade each of the components

which are obviously not the premium pieces

due to the modest prices of the crate amps

    use it as a classroom

    make myself self-sufficient/marketable

    in this area...

& hopefully end up with a perty good amp

kinda like when i started playing

i also educated myself on the tech

now i have people coming to me

    wanting neck resets, fretwork etc.

i have your tube amp book

    i will soon purchase your

    bias kit w/manual as well

have a state of the art weller

    soldering station as well as

    a good digital multi meter

i know from reading another of your

    threads reguarding the tweed amp

    replications that the belton sockets

are a preferable brand for quality

    construction

who are the other mfgs of the

    components i will be needing

    for this endeavor...caps etc

where may these component items purchased

any other directional hints you might

offer to expedite my learning curve

    would also be greatly appreciated

    thanks

I am not sure what you are asking here.

If you are looking for parts, in the tubes and parts secion of my website there are the folks that I use.

yes, specifically the parts you feel are the higher quality parts

i appologize, i have read your site & somehow overlooked the parts section

    thank you for your response
