  1. Myles, I am retubing my Kingsley D32C (2 el84 & 2 6v6). I seem to recall that your favorite current-production el84 is the GT EL-84S, is that correct? What current-production 6v6 can you recommend? Thank you!!! (BTW, I hope am am not borthering you unecessarily with this question - I looked for this info on your website but could not find it)
  2. Hi Myles, I have become very interested in Cornford amps since seeing your blurb on them on the "World's Best Amps" section of your website. Specifically, I am very interested the Carrera (and to a lesser extent the Harlequin - all thing being equal I would rather have reverb and an effects loop, not to mention the UniValve-esque ability to use various power tubes). Unfortunately, there are no dealers anywhere near Phoenix, so I have been unable to try one out. What do you have to say about the Carrera and/or Harlequin (or Cornford amps in general)? Tone wise, can you compare/contrast them to other amps with 20 or fewer watts? (My research has identified the Carmen Ghia, MAZ 18, MINI Z, UniValve, Kingsley Deluxe, and Vox CC-AC15 as other possibilities for my next amp, to be used for blues/rock - with an emphasis on good tones at moderate volumes)
  3. Myles, THD's website says the following about Yellow Jackets "In a 100 watt amp like a Twin Reverb or Marshall 100, either two or four Yellow Jackets® can be used. If only two are used and the other two sockets are left empy, the output is dropped to about 20 watts." My question is, can I leave two sockets empty on my 5150 without using Yellow Jackets? What about three? Does it matter which of the four I leave in? Thanks, as always, Myles. Sean
  4. Myles, I have been seriously considering purchasing a THD UniValve or BiValve because of the flexibility afforded by using different tubes. I have recently read a bit about Maven Peal and London Power amps, which seem to offer similar flexibility (albeit at higher prices for the most part). In addition to their amps, I am considering having London Power's "Power Scaling" mod installed in my 5150. LP's Kevin O'Connor says this mod affects the sound less than an attenuator. I know you love the THD stuff, do you have any comments on these other makers? About the "Power Scaling" mod? Thanks, Sean
  5. Hey Miles, I was wondering if you could discuss any cons associated with purchasing a BiValve instead of a UniValve (aside from price)? I think that 90% of the time I would use only one power tube in order to achieve power tube saturation at reasonable levels. All things being equal, however, I would like the ability to add a second power tube for playing live, if necessary. The BiValve also allows for even more experimentation with different combinations of tubes, which would be cool. However, I am afraid all things are not equal. The very positive review on THD's site states "It's a different effect to the UniValve's threedimensional warmth, but but it is equally rewarding." What comments do you have? As always, many thanks.
  6. FROM THE "FRIENDS" PORTION OF MYLES' WEBSITE: "Tom has what may be the best sounding 5150 II around. He plays in the style of Van Halen with a few twists of his own. If you have a 5150 and want a few tips (even the folks at Peavey think his amps are some of the best examples of what these amps can do), drop me an email and I will forward it off to Tom." Myles, I would love to get some tips on maximizing the capabilities of my 5150 (I am already going to test drive a Dr. Z attenuator this weekend). I have an early-nineties 5150 (not II) half-stack. Thanks for always being so helpful, Sean
  7. Myles, I am looking for a good-sounding power attenuator that will be useful for gigs as well as practice and recording. I currently play through a 5150 half-stack (120 watts), but will also use it with other amps (and am therefore wary of the Hot Plate - I don't want to have to buy a different attenuator for different impedance amps). Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Sean
