  1. Myles - You've said good things in the past about Hot Rod Deluxe and Classic 30 as being good workmanlike amps if tweeked properly. Have you had any experience with the newer Traynors, specifically the YCV-40 series? Mike
  2. I went ahead with the switch out to 6CA7's. With the EL34's I backed off my treble control a couple of notches. With the 6CA7's I leave is flat. This would support your "deeper tone" comment. Thanks.
  3. I just had my old Traynor YBA-1 reworked by a local tech who's great with old tube amps. It currently is running EL34's and I'm really happy with the sound. However, he raves about the old 6CA7's and now that a couple of folks have started producing them again (including GT) he's suggested replacing the EL34's. What kind of sound difference might I expect?
  4. Myles - I replaced the V1 in my Hot Rod Deluxe as you suggested. I originally tried an Electro Harmonix 12AX7 and noted an improvment. However, on the clean channel I go from "0" to full volume at 3 or 4, then increasing levels of OD. I contacted your friends at kcanostubes.com and went w/ a Mullard 4024 (12AT7) for less gain as I am looking for a very clean sound in this channel, but I still go into OD very quickly. Could there be a taper issue with the volume pot? Also, do you know what benefits would be derived from replacing V2 and V3? I'd like to make the OD channel more useful, but I don't which tube(s) it uses to generate its gain (I'm guessing V3 is an inverter tube)?
  5. I play basic R&B, blues, rock and want a range from very clean to moderate distortion (similar to what you'd expect from a blackface Fender). I have a chance to reacquire an old Traynor YBA-1A amp that I bought it in college (circa 1973) for cheap. I've read that these are solid workmanlike amps that can be mod'd to yield an excellent basic amp. Any words of wisdom.
