I've had good luck getting bass tracks to sit in the mix by reducing 200hz on a quasi parametric EQ (Tech 21 Q-Strip). That seems to be the area that collides with the rest of the mix in my experience. Your results may vary, try taking the low mid down and then shifting the frequency.

I was going to suggest the opposite, boosting around 200Hz. Right now the bass is all woof and no pitch, no attack, I don't hear any definition like the Tina track. 200Hz might help or some higher stuff for more definition.

  2. I keep coming back to 8dio 1990 Studio Grand. It seems to cover a nice dynamic and emotional range. It's on sale pretty often if you're patient. Cinepiano Piano is Blue used to be another I used all the time but it's very roomy, doesn't have a ton of attack if you need that. Nice atmosphere if you need that thing. Another one that pops up on sale from time to time.

I haven't played with any of the physical modeling pianos yet, maybe I should try a demo. The audio demos don't knock me out but I'll bet they're fun to play.

  3. Yeah, those were my first Genesis and Yes experiences too. I still like the mix of prog with a hook, rather than depressing droning over Mellotron. Invisible Touch was a bit too much pop and I never even listened to "I can't dance" except for the single. Though like Tony said, they survived the 80s where most other prog bands didn't (until 90125.)

After watching this I bought the Arturia Synclavier V, which was (is?) on sale for $75. I really like it. With the Prophet 10 I'm well on my way to recreating his setup in 1983. :)

  4. Yeah I have a Midimoog and it's pretty much impossible to really tweak it while I play. But at least I can set the mod wheel to open the filter and stuff like that. Also have a Super Jupiter with Programmer and I don't really touch it once I dial up the sound I want.
  5. They can call it Toto if they want, fans can decide if they want to buy a ticket. People want to get in a room (someday) and listen to that music. No one is left in the original Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart band but people still go to their concerts anyway. David Paich is apparently in poor health and can't tour anymore. I ran into Bobby Kimball at NAMM once and when they got back together he apparently didn't realise he was in Steve's Band. He gave me an intense look and with heavy beer breath said, "No one tells BC what to do!" OK dude good luck with the BC Band playing the Indian casino outside Bakersfield or whatever.

There was a Sting documentary in the 80s, about the original solo lineup, "Bring On The Night." Miles Copeland was the band manager, and he was getting some pushback from the band that they were getting paid so much less than Sting. He said something like, "if we announce you're not going to make the concert, how many people are going to ask for a refund? 6, 7 people. If we announce that Sting isn't going to make it, how many people will ask for a refund? Every single one of them!"
