  1. If it's great, you enjoy and cherish them. If it's horrible, then you're thankful you don't have to do that again.
  2. It's definitely sound, but it's not music.
  3. I saw 'Oppenheimer' in September in an IMAX theatre. It was my first time watching a movie in the theater since February 2020. Göransson's soundtrack was the thing that blew me away the most about the movie. It was relentless, it hit you HARD. It was immersive. I was impressed. Though LG has been known for his work in films and TV shows, he's also been a music producer. I had no idea until a few months ago that he actually produced this tune: He's also worked with Adele:
  4. The most expensive keyboard I have is a Nord Stage 3 (88). I do perform with it, but I'm selective of where I use it. Lately I've only used it for semi-private affairs like weddings/funerals, but it's mostly because I need piano sounds and piano range/action. I have a weekly solo cover gig playing at an outdoor night market. It's in a privately-owned lot, but it's publicly accessible. I don't take the Nord there but it's mainly because I want to use a setup that's lighter and easier to tote around (The Nord takes quite a few minutes to load/unload from my car). I'm using a Nektar Panorama P6 USB keyboard, a Macbook Pro and an audio interface (with a small stereo PA). It's also to protect from the climate because it gets a bit chilly (for California standards - low 50s) and during the first gig I played, there was dew forming on my keyboard. If I'm playing with others (I'm planning to have my band's percussionist join me later on in the year) and when it gets warmer, I might tote the Nord.
  5. When I used to perform with an Ensoniq EPS sampler workstation, I used to alter the "ensoniq" logo on the back with electrical tape to spell out my name. The last time I performed on TV, I played a Nord Electro 2 and the station staff covered the back of my keyboard plus the stand on the bottom with a black skirting. I suppose it was mainly there to keep the cables out of view, but the "Nord Electro 2" logo was also covered up. I had no say in it, nor did they tell me, "We're going to have to cover the logo on your keyboard."
  6. Got a DJ Tech Tools MIDI Fighter Twister knob controller for my DAW setup the other week to provide more tactile control of my softsynths. Very well-built, nice solid knob action and can be easily custom-configurable via the MF Utility app (just remember to run as Administrator in Win 10/11 or else the application screen will keep blinking and won't recognize the MIDI Fighter Twister. It looks pretty sweet with the LEDs, even when you boot up your computer.
  7. Gen-Xer here who grew up on the time travel subgenre...'Back to the Future' trilogy, the 'Bill and Ted' trilogy, the 'Terminator' trilo...okay just the first two movies. 'The Matrix' kinda sorta qualifies but the first one was all that mattered. As for TV shows, the original 'Doctor Who', 'Quantum Leap' and though I'm no big Marvel-head, the time-travel aspect of 'Loki' on Disney+ got me hooked. For all time always! As for music, Time keeps flowin' like a river, time it won't give me time 'cos time makes lovers feel, time after time. WHAT TIME IS IT?!?! I got too much time on my hands.
  8. Los Angeles (Hollywood area) here. Did just fine. It just rained and rained and rained and rained (normal rainstorms have breaks in them; whereas this was pretty much constant moderate-to-heavy precipitation from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday night). Electricity and cable internet has continued uninterrupted (though we had a very brief - like 20 seconds - power outage on Sunday evening). I'm especially glad I renovated my music studio room over the past 2 years (just finished this past Summer) which also involved caulking/sealing window frames and under the wall baseboards (there were water leaks in the past). I pretty much did all the work plus painting and drywall patching, and the only professional help I got was hiring someone to install the new carpet. Glad to report there's nary a leak (It already had a test trial during last August's Tropical Storm Hilary - rain during Winter is normal here in Mediterranean Climate Southern California, but during July/August/September it's pretty much unheard of). Most of the damage you see in the news are people who live near mountains/canyons which are vulnerable to rock/mudslides as the mostly-sandstone soil gets inundated with water, and people who live in flood-prone areas where the terrain is lower and water historically collects. I'm fortunate to live in neither, where the gutter and storm drain system works as advertised.
  9. Anyone see this yet? Not a fan of the dead snare sound on this one, but it's otherwise perfect (love the bass articulation, the percussion and the mandolin). Billy Joel "Turn The Lights Back On" If It were produced by Phil Ramone #billyjoel #newsingle - YouTube
  10. It was cool, but they keyed it down a whole step lower (Bb from C)!
  11. Oh yeah, if anyone's curious: (In 6/8) |C C/E |F |G |E E7/G# |Am |D/F# |C/G G |F C/E :|| For pretty much the whole song except the instrumental bridge which is: |Am |D D/F# |G |C C/E |F Am |Gsus4 G |F Am |Gsus4 G |
  12. Billy and Liberty have made up and are on good terms again in recent years, and in fact Billy Joel wrote the foreword to Liberty's recent memoir book. For the longest time (no pun intended) DeVitto didn't want to have anything to do with Billy Joel's music, but in recent interviews he's been talking about how he came up with the rhythms to iconic Billy Joel tunes. https://www.thethings.com/did-billy-joel-scam-former-drummer-liberty-devitto-royalties-lawsuit/
  13. I was just about to go to sleep and I saw "Billy Joel" trend on Twitter. Clicked to see what was going on. He has a new song out. WAIT, WHAT!?!? BILLY JOEL HAS A NEW SONG OUT?!?! AFTER 30 YEARS BILLY JOEL HAS RELEASED A NEW SONG?!?!? Here it is - "Turn The Lights Back On" My first impressions are below the YouTube embed. First impressions: I'm kinda torn here -- As a songwriter (and Billy Joel was one of my big musical inspirations growing up), I think it's a lovely tune - not groundbreaking, but nice. And his older, more "gruff" sounding vocals are somewhat of a nod to his big inspiration, Ray Charles, who had a similar gruff-ness in his latter work. But as an audio geek, bleh - what a horrible, overcompressed mix with little dynamics. And there's no low or high end whatsoever...
  14. I've had cataract surgery...twice. My first time was at age 45. I was diagnosed with it at age 36 and it got progressively worse over time. By early 2017 I was pretty much blind in my right eye for two months. I opted for the costly multi-focal lens, and had the operation in Spring 2017. It was the trippiest 15 minutes of my life. I recovered very well from that. Then suddenly last Summer my left eye vision went bad literally overnight. I went to the doctor ASAP thinking I might have retinal detachment. Fortunately it wasn't, but it was another cataract. I was also blind in that eye for around two months (though I could detect light/colors better than when the right eye went bad) but since I had mild glaucoma in the left eye, I had some complications which resulted in abnormal eye pressure. I had the 2nd operation in late Summer last year and though I have my vision back (it took a long time to see clearly compared to the right eye), the glaucoma attack permanently dilated my pupil, making my eye extremely light-sensitive (I have to wear sunglasses in broad daylight now). As for gigging, it varies of course. I was able to play music and read music during my last episode, relying on my right eye (The multifocal lens that I invested in paid off). The one disadvantage of the multifocal lens is that looking at bright lights at night results in concentric halos around that light. Not a huge deal but somewhat noticeable. I did not have the multifocal lens in the left eye because of the complications.
  15. Hold up - If they plugged in the Korg Rhythm 55, where's the bass coming from? Certainly that Korg drum machine didn't have a sync jack, did it? Or was it just for show and the drums and bass are coming from a DAW or backing track?
