  1. I'm with the Korg X-50! - I used it on top of a Nord Electro 4d - Now a Yamaha YC61. These patches : Padtropolis, Universal Choir, Liquified, Night Sky are really useable - some of them can be heard on Eno produced Coldplay albums. I don't use it for piano's (unless it's a special effect - with lots of reverb), don't use it for Organ, Just the spacey Pads - that's what the YC is for on the bottom. It's very lightweight - has handles - and John Paul Jones used one in Celebration Day.
  2. I was a bass player in an international touring band in the 80's and early 90's. Just before a European tour our keyboardist quit. Once I got my bearings in Europe our tour manager borrowed a Roland D50, I created a simple warm pad sound for some intro's and breaks. By the late 90's I'd switched to keyboards exclusively in one band and continued to play bass in another. I loved playing keys, it was easy and fun - not to mention, I had something to hide behind. I also got asked by a few indie bands to play keys after they made a record which included keyboard parts the singer or producer played. I had to opportunity to add some production quality and ambience to their otherwise edgy aggressive material. One band sounded sort of punk and trashy - with keys they had a more Massive Attack vibe. I became popular, other bands tried to 'poach' me - that was fun. I ended up playing Key's and acoustic guitar in a pretty loud band with 2 Les Paul guitar players - we had an incredibly talented singer/bassist (he played a left handed Hofner - say no more). He'd often become a bit of a showman and would stop playing bass... when this happened I comped him with my left hand, either the low end of the Organ or a Korg R3. Fast forward 10 years and this band has reformed without the singer/bassist. I went back on bass, and gradually brought the keys, again, for intro's and breaks. Since I'm only playing breaks I can actually HEAR the keyboards, as the two guitars settle down a little during these parts. In the old days I couldn't hear myself that well in rehearsal - gigs were never an issue with monitors, although friends often said they couldn't hear me in the mains. I use an old Korg X-50 for this - I absolutely LOVE this little 2006 keyboard, it's featherweight... I just use it for pads (Padtropolis) , choirs and soundscapes, piano's and organ parts have been dropped by the wayside. I have a Korg MicroX as a backup for the X-50.
  3. I had one around 12 years ago. I played tons of gigs with it, many of which I can't remember - I also used it on 2 or 3 albums. I replaced it with Nord Electro 4d in 2014 ( was a sucker for the Mellotron patch) I've always missed it. A few have showed up for sale locally (but still pretty far away) and I've been tempted purchase one again - I recall the keybed being amazing, and the fact it had B3, Piano, Electric Piano and Warm Pad all on the same machine - Now - my tastes in sound quality have likely improved over the years. I have a feeling all these sounds will appear very dated when I hear them again. Has anyone had a recent 'go' on one? I think I'm secretly looking for negative reviews - I want to be talked out of this - I have a feeling it's an 'emotional memory' purchase - and it's tricky to have a 'play' before buying used these days.
  4. I'm looking for a mini line Mixer solution ideally with 3 or 4 stereo inputs, 1/4" outputs and a headphone jack - currently I'm running two keyboards in stereo in a loud live band situation (will be adding another). I'm using two headrush 108's for monitors - and I'll also have a feed going from the headrush's to the PA. I have no need for XLR Outs, and I'd rather inputs be 1/4", no USB interface required - I got one on amazon that USB or wall-wart powered - perfect - just missing a headphone jack. Overkill for what I need - The Radial Key Largo - no headphone out though. and too many features - $$$.
  5. I've been watching some Mumford and Sons concert footage - and I'm interested in what the keyboardist Ben Lovett is doing and how he gets his sound. It looks a though the his Nord Stage Piano doesn't have any audio outputs (photo attached) . They do have an auxiliary keyboard player live. Does anyone know if he's changing his own sounds? (it looks as if he is) - does anyone know what his Nord is slaving?
  6. I really like this idea (splaying out the top beams on an X Board) - I have a stand like that arriving tomorrow - cost only 35$ - The distance between the two boards is way too much 12", If I can't splay them out I will - (however - both boards are only 61 keys) - I'm going to try and shorten the 'poles' on the top attachment - perhaps bolt them against each other. I have no welding capabilities. I have an Apex stand - but I'm so tired of my sustain and rotary peddles getting messed up with the 'feet'. - also I'm getting really tired of the "Duran Duran" look - it had it's day.
  7. I found the FA didn't have a basic warm analog pad sound - virtually on EVERY production synthesizer made since the 80's - seriously? yup. not one (including expansion packs) - So I programmed one myself (tweaked) but it sounded weak - that and the fact that you had to do about 5 steps to get in into performance mode (using the sample pads as favorite patches) made the FA not suitable for my live 'Top' board. Supernatural sounds be damned.... I don't know what to call it (the George Michael Pad sound perhaps?) - but in one form or another of it is essential in the band I play in. Thge GM one doesn't cut it. I haven't had a chance to get my hands on a DS - there's scarcity of just about everything in Toronto now...from the vids I've seen I think it will have 'that' patch. However - they're going for about $700 - $1000 used which I think way too much for a plastic synth containing 20 year old sounds. Currently I'm using a Korg Micro-x (mini triton)... cost about $150 and sounds fabulous, only 25 keys though....
  8. I'm in the same situation as the OP - looking at the Roland Juno DS series as a top board swiss army knife - Brass, Strings ect I have recently abandoned Mainstage as a live rig (too many hassles to mention here) and I'm going back to the simplicity of plugging a few 'Romplers' in. My bottom board is a Nord Electro 4d which covers B3, Piano, Elec Piano, Strings. I also have a little Korg Micro x that I use for pads/choir/layers with the Nord. The new board would be piano, for the songs I'm using the Nord for organ simultaneously, horns, orch and more pads. I recently DID own a Roland FA06 - I set the performance pads up as favorites - but it took too many buttons clicks to get the board into performance mode. I want plug and play. Even though it doesn't have the Supernatural Sounds I'm going to rent a DS 61 and give it a try.
  9. I have 2 Headrush FRFR 08's - although they're fine for acoustic guitar and vocals for a folk band I play in - my old rock band got back together after a 7 year break. I tried using them as monitors - Not only did they have a hard time keeping up - only the B3 patch sounded any good. I'm using a Nord Electro 4d and a version of a Korg Triton for pads. The pads made the bottom end feel like these little speakers were being rattled around in their cabinets. Trouble is I didn't bring long enough speaker cables and they were right under my rig - perhaps running them about 8 feet behind me would have been better. I was also running them in stereo - which is cool for the leslie effect - but it might have tightened it up in played in mono...
  10. I've owned a couple of Korg R3's over the years - again I find myself without one and seriously missing it - I use them for two sounds - the delayed Sine lead and the best Bass patch I have ever heard. It's fat, it's soft and has a tiny bit of delay on it. I don't know the named of the actual patches as the editor on my Mac is out of date and needs an upgrade. I've scrolled through the patches on synths like the Novation Bass station and the Korg Minilogue - and they always fell a little short - same thing with my Roland FA06 (that's much of the Integra sound set). Does anybody know of a mini synth that could produce a bass sound like that? I haven't tried the Roland Boutique units yet...
  11. "Remote Keyboard Switch." - done - thanks harmonizer
  12. OP here - still not there - from the responses I take it: A) I either need to have the Nord 4d send on all MIDI channels, or B) individually edit each patch on a Studio set to receive Midi Channel 1? "Google Roland FA-06 Reference Manual. Go to the editing section. It's all there" A GRTFM response, Don't get me wrong I really, really appreciate the help - and I probably deserve the slap for asking such a newbie question - but it's not in the reference manual I'm looking at. Editing a studio set 44 Editing a tone 46 Editing a pattern 50 Editing Effects 52
  13. Last fall I got a killer deal on a used Fa-06. ($1050). I"d heard the supernatural sound set and was impressed. I always like buying less expensive boards they eventually put the flagship sounds in. Mapping out the keyboard and creating my own 'Studio Sets" was easy - but slaving the Fa with another controller wasn"t. I could only slave first patch in each studio set I created. I"ve been playing keys for years and never had a midi keyboard behave this way. Is there a simple way to control the Roland with, say, my Nord electro? Have the FA provide a back ground layer of strings to my Nord Piano?
  14. That's it! Thank you zukskywalker! This forum NEVER disappoints....
