  1. I just took delivery today of a 50 watt head from RC Davis Amplifiers. It's a great, well-built, relatively light unit. The tone's are a bit black-face bassman head, with some overall improvements. You can check them out at www.rcdavisamps.com . The front panel on all RC Davis amps is, from left to right, input, bass, middle, treble, volume, jewel. I tried one of my Strats and one of my Les Pauls. I almost like the Strat better through this amp. That's pretty amazing because, right now, I tend to favor my LP through most amps. The mid-range control is pretty amazing, virtually a gain control. With the mid cranked, the amp is lively at almost any volume. With the volume and the mid cranked, there was complete saturation. The reverb control knob is on the back of the amp. It comes with a footswitch which also has a reverb control knob on it. Very cool! At low volume, you can crank the reverb for super-surf sounds. The amp reduces the reverb as you crank the volume. I'm really enjoying the chimey, yet full, complex distortion you get when you turn the amp up. It's relatively clean at low volumes. Or you can crank the volume, and get clean sounds by lowering the volume on your axe. Check 'em out! RC Davis offers its 30 watt and 50 watt amps as heads, 1x12 combo, and a few other combo options. I'm a believer! vc
  2. You can use higher ohm cabs with the 2 ohm and 4 ohm Fender transformers. You cannot go the other way around though. There may be a slight drop in power at certain frequencies but it is safe.I can only contribute here because I own this very amp. The minimum load for the extension speaker cab on the Blues DeVille is 8ohms. As Myles said, you won't have a problem with the 16 ohm cab.
  3. Thanks!!!! Hopefully, I have the mental capacity to read it! vc
  4. Myles, I'm not Mike's friend (nothing personal, just don't know you). I do own a Super Champ which I have just re-tubed. I'm in love again. It sounds heavenly. I bring back Mike's email because I had some difficulty finding the 6C10 tube. I found on the web a supplier who was able to send me a NOS GE Compactron 6C10. Do you know the function of the 6C10? In the event we Super Champ lovers can't find these, do you know of a suitable substitute? Also, with all of the gain cranked, the bass really just craps out. Do you happen to have any idea if this is just because of the way the amp is wired? Might a speaker with a higher wattage capacity help this problem? Thanks! Vinny
  5. [/qb] Myles, Isn't there an acceptable direction in which you can go? For example, I've been told that, if your head puts out 8 ohms, you can operate an 8 ohm cab or a 16 ohm cab, but, you can't go lower than the amp's minimum load and play an 8 ohm head through a 4 ohm cab. Is this correct? Thanks! Vinny[/qb]I do not recommend mis-matching impedances.[/QB] Thanks Myles! I'm glad I asked. Vinny
  6. Roger, I may be missing something here. Just make sure the cab ohms matches the amps. Myles, Isn't there an acceptable direction in which you can go? 7. Myles, As always, I thank you for your valuable time. Vinny
  8. Hey Myles! I did a search of the forum on this topic and got nothing. Is there an appropriate way of disposing of tubes? Until several years ago, I would have thrown them in the garbage and thought nothing of it. Now, I try to dispose properly of potentially hazardous material or recycle-ables. Feel free to tell me that I'm being a flake and should just throw them in a bag I leave at my curb. Thanks! Vinny
  9. Vinny, Yes, this tube is a shorter bottle and they sound pretty great. I guess that is why we cannot seem to make enough fast enough. http://www.groovetubes.com/dealers_us.cfm [/QB] Myles, Last question: Can you tell me anything about the GT 6L6 R ?? It kinda looks a bit like the tube I'm trying to replace. Is it shorter than the other 6L6's? See what you get for sending me surfing? Vinny
  10. Vinny, Yes, this tube is a shorter bottle and they sound pretty great. I guess that is why we cannot seem to make enough fast enough. If you are in Europe try: Doug Preston over at www.dougstubes.com is another great resource. He may even have some of the GT GE's. WOW! There's a ton of great stuff here! Thanks again for all of the time Myles! Vinny
  11. Myles, Thanks for your time. In the event that I can find a different solution for the Marshall, I can use the tubes in my Fender amp. My other thought was to try the GT 6L6 GE, or whatever it is that Groove Tubes is calling its reproduction of the GE tube. Although the base of the tube is like the other 6L6's, the glass bulb is much smaller. Problem one is that these tubes are expensive. Problem two is that, everywhere I've looked, that tube is on back-order. I'm also wondering if that tube is too good to make a difference in an amp like this Marshall. Thanks again for your time! Vinny
  12. Dear Myles, I have a Marshall JTM 30 from the mid-1990's. I recently decided to replace the power tubes. In it are what I can only presume were the stock, factory tubes. I can only presume because I bought the amp used about 3 years ago. These tubes are the Sovtek 6L6WGC. Thinking that a 6L6 is a 6L6, I bought a matched pair of JJ Tesla 6L6 GC tubes. I'd chosen these tubes because I've had good experience with JJ tubes, and because I'd read that this particular tube would enhance the low end response of the amp. I'm looking for more low end in the JTM 30. These JTM 30 amps have a sort of "cage" that screws on over the tubes to protect them. After I'd put the JJ tubes in the amp, I realized that there was no way I could put back on the amp the protective cage for the tubes. The JJ tubes stick out the back about 1/2 inch farther than the original tubes. When I compared the tubes, I realized that, while the base of the JJ tubes looks like a little cup (like most other power tubes), the base of the 6L6WGC is flat, almost non-existent. If I want to be able to put the "cage" back on the back of the amp, am I stuck with the Sovtek 6L6WGC? Is there another manufacturer which makes a 6L6WGC?? I do want to put that "cage" back on the amp. I've had a prior experience where a power tube broke while transporting another amp. Thanks in advance for your help! Vinny
