  1. Hey Miles! On my Peavey Classic 30... I've got some noises coming from my amp. Low rumbling. The noises stop when I push the tubes deeper into the tube sockets with my fingers. This was pretty bad two years ago so I sent the chassis back to Peavey and they resoldered some joints for me. The noise was lessened, but never really went away. Now the noise is back to the point where my sound guy is complaining that he has to mute my channel when someone is speaking through the PA while my amp is on. I've increased the pressure of tension of the tube retainer clasps (is that what they are called?). That helped a little. Do I need to replace my tube sockets? How do I get rid of this problem?
  2. Hey Myles! Long time no talk to! Hope all is well. Question: can I do damage to my Peavey Classic 30 if I run a 1/4 inch lead microphone cable in the "INPUT" for use as a PA (vocal SM58) during a few dozen practices? Thanks!
  3. In my Peavey Classic 30 (2 channel amp), I'd like to install a footswitch for channel switching. Would this footswitch work by simply plugging it in, or is there soldering and work involved? Right now it has a reverb footswitch which works properly.
  4. Funny you should mention that. My bro-in-law and I are making a guitar-centered trip to So. Cal. Fast food and fast fret boards. We were thinking Nov 18 (Fri)or 19 (Sat). I'd be glad to bring it down, if you're really interested.
  5. Mike This is almost surely a tube. Try swapping a fresh 12AX7 in V1 then V2 etc. Preamp tubes are the worst culprit Thanks. Am I remembering correctly that tubes have to be "matched"? Myles: Update on my Peavey Classic 30: I took it into the shop because of the crackling while on idle. Turns out that the tubes and capacitors are fine. Might be the board(?). The tech is advising that I'd have to ship to Peavey for repair. The labor costs may be prohibitive. Here's what I'm thinking... if this whole endevor is going to run me $300 for a 50 lb. amp, I'd rather spend $300 more and get a 22 lb. Reverend 5-15 Goblin. Any ideas on possible diagnosis or options? ie. sell for parts etc...? Maybe a second opinion? Thanks.

  7. Hey Myles... question... I am experiencing a faint crackle in an amp. Someone just gave me a used tube amp (what a cool guy!), and I can hear a slight crackle. I've played it once so far, and the crackle appeared after a few minutes of playing, so I assume it's the tubes(?). The volume level of the crackle is audible regardless of the guitar's volume knob position, so I assume it's an amp issue. The crackle is faint, but it kind of sounds like you just put put a needle on a slightly dirty LP record. It's the Peavey Classic 30 combo. It's the model that does not have "PEAVEY" across the front grill. Possibly a few years old. Likely has not been used much. It's from a studio, non-smoking.
  8. OK. They're on order! Thanks again!
  9. Hey Myles, I'm torn between speaker or tubes replacement. Here's the facts. I've got a Crate V1512 amp. I like the sound, alot. HC reviews talk about replacing the stock speaker with a Celestion G12H30 to get more tone and versatility. More classic rock sound. That's my sound, in part. Blues and alternative too. I want it to drip the blues, and crunch up when needed. I don't need a Metallica or an Insane setting. I'd rather have a good clean and blues crunch available. I use a Fuzz, Mystic Blues and Tubescreamer. I do like some gain when I go clean. I RARELY go COMPLETELY clean. Other V1512 users report the need for more mids. I have to agree. Is that a function of the speaker? Here's the break down: Crate V1512 Amp (no mods) Using a Crate V-Series 12" Speaker 15 Watts - All Tube Class A Design Three 12AX7 Preamp Tubes Two EL84 Power Tubes Groove Tubes External Speaker Jack 16 Ohm Operation Spring Reverb To get more tone and more mids, would you recommend speaker replacement or would a set of tubes be the way to get this done? Will the sound be noticeably improved, or could I be at the point of diminishing returns? Thanks!
  10. Hey Myles, we've discussed me buying a Fender Cyber Deluxe. I've sinced been considering auditioning single pedals and keeping my solid state amp (Fender Deluxe 90). I understand that any pedal will react and sound differently on a tube amp vs. a SS, but are there certain TYPES of pedals to avoid with SS vs. tubes? My first audition will be a Boss DS-1. Then I'll be looking into a chorus pedal. One more question: what does the Ibanez Tube Screamer do? Please tell me it gives the warmth of a tube to a SS!
  11. Excellent point about the volume levels. Something I hadn't thought of. Thank you!
  12. Myles, I'm new to the forum (love it so far), and I haven't read much of your stuff, but from what I've seen, you look like a good candidate to ask this question. I'm sold on the idea of tubes sounding REALLY good, but for someone who hasn't found a "sound", plays in a church band which plays a good range of songs/sounds and likes to screw around with different band covers (mostly rock), would you suggest a modeling amp (1 x 12 please) or a tube amp with good pedals? Under $900? Thanks!
