  1. Certainly the band leader should have communicated the entirety of the commitment. For me, I've played this game before, and every time I play the game I learn new lessons. Here's how I handle sub gigs now: BL: Would you sub this gig? Me: That sounds fun! I have a few questions: How much does the gig pay? Do you expect a rehearsal for this gig? If so, we need to lock that date in as well, I am unlikely to have flexibility when the date is near. What are the times of: load-in, sound-check, downbeat? Am I the only sub that day, or are you subbing multiple chairs? (If I don't know the band): Who's on bass and drums? Am I expected to play horn lines and what-not? I don't give a yes until I have clear answers to all of those. Of course, the truth is that these days I'm unlikely to take any sub gig for any reason. My current life situation has me trying to gig less, not more. --Dave
  2. I've mostly learned to keep a certain professional distance from musicians until I've played with them for a really long time, and gotten to see how they run their lives. So I'm definitely cool with almost everyone I've ever shared a stage with. There are two exceptions who leap immediately to mind, folks who I really don't want anything to do with. Both are guitarists, and both have terrible reputations in my musical communities. Well-deserved terrible reputations IMO. --Dave
  3. So much good stuff here! Welcome to the forum. I'd add something but everything I might say has been said above, usually more than once. So I'll just say welcome, haha. --Dave
  4. After much internal debating, measuring, and head-scratching, I concluded that the Stay stand would probably work just fine, but that my best bet was the K&M 18880. And so I went to buy one. I can get one overnight, but....the 2nd tier is back-ordered everywhere I could find it, with delivery too late for my Oct 11 gig. Sigh. So I bought a nice red Stay two-tier tower, to match my red Nord Stage. (OK, OK, I really wanted black, but those weren't immediately available either). I think it will work great, and if I'm wrong I'll return it and get the K&M. Thanks for all the advice, everyone! I remember now why I love this place so much.
  5. Too bad, because I would really love to find someone to take over this Third Sol gig. It's a fun band with a nice mix of original music and covers. The leader is trying to gig more, and I am trying to gig less. Thanks for the kind words about The Funkery! I'm more proud of "Brew The Funk" than any other record I've ever made. --Dave
  6. My grandfather had a pithy saying that covers this topic quite well. "Some folks live and learn, some folks never learn." Thanks for the wisdom, Papa. --Dave
  7. Oh, yes, we probably do! Do you play with Too Smooth? If you do, and if Vincent Lopez is still with those guys, tell him I said I love him and miss him. <3 (He was co-author of what is probably my very favorite song I've ever been involved in writing.) I gig a lot less these days, but I'm playing with Rudy Ramos' band, Third Sol. I know a lot of cats in the general Latin scene, and I've also played a lot of Funk and Old School. More in the South Bay than the City, I lived in San Jose for almost 20 years before I moved up here. --Dave
  8. Ah yes, my initial post should have mentioned that I sit on all gigs now. I stood for many years, and I actually have a Spider stand with three tiers that I absolutely love, but it's the extra-tall model, and when sitting it sticks a column right in front of my face, which I didn't like much at all. I'm definitely intrigued by the Stay stands. One of the interesting things about this rig is that both keyboards are quite shallow, so most "standard" stands are way too long for what I need. The Stay stand seems like it would have the advantage of allowing me to push the keyboards all the way back against the column, and the only thing that would stick out too far would be the ends of the arms. I'm also VERY interested in the idea of using drum hardware! I've never even considered this idea before, but I know when I finally quit f'ing around with stupid folding benches and started sitting on a drum throne, I've never looked back. My only problem is I know nothing about drum hardware, so I'd be starting from scratch on figuring that all out. --Dave
  9. Hi All, In my first thread in three years I already got recommendations for K&M and Stay stands, and I'm looking at those. Let me give a bit more details. My new rig is: Nord Stage 2 76-key on the bottom, Hammond SK-1 on top. My current two-tier stand is bigger and heavier than I need for this rig, and it's also been beat up on a couple hundred gigs, so...... definitely time for a new stand. I'm also considering a stand alternative â buying the legs for my Nord Stage, and then getting a one-tier stand that's super small and light, and using it to put the SK-1 over the leg-standing Nord. I apparently missed the boat on the short-lived company that made a second tier that clamped onto the end cheeks of the Nord. Curious if anyone tried those? Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences and advice with me! --Dave
  10. Thanks everyone! Nice to be welcomed back, and wow, I've already got some stands to look at.
  11. Hey all! Only long-timers here will remember me. I seem to have tried to rejoin the conversation a couple of times, but I haven't been a regular participant here since something like 2012. I've been watching the threads go by, and it appears to be the same amazingly cool place it always was, only with a bunch of names I don't recognize, haha. I finally replaced my Hammond XK-3c with an SK-1, and I thought it would be polite to say "hello again" before I started asking folks about patches, and smaller/lighter two-tier stands, and posting replaced keyboards for sale in Garage Sale. (And yes, I intend to do all of those things.) So, um...."hi!" It's been a long time. Hope you guys are well. Life is good here in the Bay, still gigging, and not as much as I used to, which is by design. --Dave
  12. Holy Mothership Batman! This thread is a veritable funkucopia of funkaliciousness. We gotta make it a sticky, because it will take me a month just to listen to all the artists here. I do want to pick one little nit, the OP said: Most of the stuff posted here are bands who got their start in the early 90s or earlier. But I don't care -- it's a great list! --Dave
  13. Well, it's probably not that surprising that the two artists which spring immediately to mind are outta New Orleans: 1. Papa Grows Funk 2. Trombone Shorty Give 'em a listen on youtube or whatever. I'll probably think of more, but I'm at my day job at the moment and gotta get back to it... --Dave
  14. Theo, is your dealer starting to cut your stuff? I almost understood that. I didn't actually understand it, but almost. Back to the OP's topic -- this tune brings back memories. Thanks for sharing it! I've never covered this tune, but I wish I had. Maybe someday... --Dave
  15. Wow, that is scary! I'm glad you are OK. Be careful out there, guys... --Dave
