OK, a surround novice, I know I can monitor the outs of PT (via 6 x interface outs into the ProControl monitor section & out to a 5.1 speaker set up) dont mean to b dumb, but how do I check back say, a DA88? Or Genex rented in as master recorder?
And to a/b stuff, (once I figure out how to listen to ext stuff in 5.1) what inexpencive domestic DVD player could I get to listen to 5.1 material in my studio? (Will a Sony Playstation 2 do it!!! I could go for one of those for my clients)

The best-sounding and practical 6-channel monitor controller I know of is the Switchman MK2 from EMM Labs, Calgary, Alberta CN. It sounds great, has multiple balanced and unbalanced inputs, balanced and unbalanced outputs, every input can be trimmed, and all the settings saved. It also has a remote controller. I take one to every session I do and bypass the monitor section of ANY console. The studio's resident engineers cannot believe what a difference THAT makes!

I am very pleased with the Martin Sound MultiMAX. Several inputs and fold down to several speaker arrays.

The Pro Tools 5.1/Pro Control supplement to the Procontrol manual talks about monitoring surround inputs, the pdf is at: http://www.digidesign.com/support/docs/
An external controller may be the best bet in the long run.

I saw a great little Technics DVD-V/DVD-A/CD player last week that ran about $250 on blowouts for the new models at Frys. Not sure if the Dolby Digital and DTS decoders were on board or not, but it did have the 6 channel outputs. Any DVD player with a digital out can be hooked up to something like Denon's receiver line that provides all format decoding, D/A conversion, and multi-channel power amps. I understand more Playstations have been sold for DVD playback in Japan than for gaming. But I don't think it has multichannel analog out. Anyone know if it has a digital audio port?
