---Although I am sure there are loads of opinions out there about which format sounds better, etc., my question is really one of marketing....I'm just very curious about everyone's take on where the marketing of these two audio-only surround formats are now and where they are headed.

Anyone got the inside scoop?

Anyone have some inspired predictions?

The impact on us of this marketing drama, it seems to me, will be much greater than the impact of the sonic and technical advance. I know there are some very large distributors of product that don't have this one figured out yet.

I actually haven't seen much marketing for either product yet. I've seen a few ads for DVD-Audio titles from DTS and Warner, neither one really going into detail about the format.

Nothing on harware though, which is pretty surprising, because Sony is normally aggressive when it comes to marketing their formats (anyone else remember the MiniDisc media blitz?).

In the May/June issue of Surround Pro, RIch Tozzoli interviewed Sony's David Kawakami about Sony's plans for SACD, including its marketing. Check it out online at http://www.surroundpro.com/2001/06/asurround.shtml

The SACD camp has done the best marketing so far, albeit a quick campaign aimed at winning over the audiophiles first--and they have a lot of support in that category of listener. Sony has created an entire SACD division (with heavy participation by Phillips) that has the task of introducing the products to the market place--again starting with audiophiles and professionals. Once they feel the format is ready, they'll turn the products over to the rest of the company--but Sony Pro Audio currently has very little to do with Sony's SACD hardware.
The DVD consortium is too fragmented to do a proper concerted marketing effort, from what I've seen so far. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't most of the DVD-V promotion done by the individual software and hardware providers?

You are about to see quite a push from Sony on SACD. Look for their kiosks in Circuit City and Best Buy this fall where they will be featuring 17 different models of SACD players. Most are DVD-V and SACD players. You can get a SACD surround system from Sony with speakers for under $600USD. There are over 350 SACDs released now, about half are surround.

We put out 15 new SACD masters in July alone, most surround. We have more than 40 more surround projects in the can waiting for editing/mastering.
