Whew! Big changes over here. I guess I'm still moderating this forum until relieved of duty. Craig Anderton, David Bryce and Phil O'Keefe will surely be missed. I'm glad that their informative forums are still archived here.
For those of you who don't know, this is the Studio Business Forum. The intention, originally, was to make this place an information sharing center regarding the nuts and bolts of studio operations and procedures. This, with the intention of providing this information to people who loved what they do (the recording of sound and music) in order to make their facility or independant recording, mixing or production business profitable.
There are extensive archives for this forum as well if you have a question and use the search function of the site.
Most of us come into this indusrty, not as business men, but as musicians. We have all spent countless hours refining and honing our musical skills. When it comes to the business side of things most of us suck at it.
If you are going to be succesful in the business of audio, you must treat doing business, like you did when you were learning your instrument.
People that are good business people do it all the time and they practice it.
To use a popular excuse that many engineers and producers do, that the are "not good at business" is not acceptable if you expect to make a living at it.
Also, the excuse, "it's not what you know but who you know" will not be tolerated. Get to know some people!
Just like learning an instrument, in business, there are people who initially demonstate more aptitude than others. What speparates the professionals from the hobbyists is the amount of experience, practice and their ability to make money at doing what they love to do.
Get paid for your talents and contributions. Charge as much as you can for what you do and.....
MAKE SURE YOU GET PAID
any questions?

Glad to see you are, Bill (still here)! Now, this forum is higher on the screen. Let's hope it gets more well-deserved traffic.
Excellent general information, here. Some people's ethics are skewed. I am getting my taste of a client not wanting to pay for goods & services rendered, per their request. It is for my computer IT business, but the philosophy is the same. I have been lucky, until now. But, given enough time, it is bound to happen.
Maybe, we can work up some things to put up in a sticky. Here ar a couple I was thinking of... - Insuring yourself and your gear. I ran across a company that will do that (MusicProInsurance.com). I am sure there are others. - Studio Management software (StudioSuite.com)

Mav...it's not just the audio business where people try to get you to do something for nothing.
You know what else is bound to happen, just when your business is becoming succesful, often without any grounds or reason?
Someone will sue you!
Nice world huh?

yeah... i remember last year when i began using a part of my basement as pre-production space for some of my clients going over with an insurance chap and a lawyer to determine exactly what i needed to cover etc etc.... to my horror i was told to insure the space for up to 2 million pounds worth of third party accident cover. when i gasped and asked if that was really necessary, the answer was a very solemn 'i'm afriad, yes'
now i wrap all my clients in toxin free organic atkins bubble-wrap and only offer them purest mountain water from france collected by my own personal alp-roadie. they love it
