How much advertizing do you use for the studio? What mags do you use for advertizing? EQ, Newspapers etc. How much Add money do you set aside?

Word of mouth always worked for me.

Advertising is not the most cost effective way to sell studio time. When I was running major recording studios, I could always tell when the issue that I placed an ad in came out.
I would be inundated with resumes......
It is , however, a very effective way to establish a brand (as in brand name).
Bill Park uses word of mouth very effectively, but Bill Park is a brand name.
Back in the 70's and 80's advertising for recording studios almost seemed taboo. You would see an ad for a competitor's studio in Pro Sound News of Mix or even Billboard and say "Oh oh,...so and so's in trouble."
In more recent times advertsing seems to be more accepted, but as I previously stated, unless you can specifically target your potential clients with it, it is not very effective with the exception of generating some name regonition.
An example.
1. You write your name, number and a missive saying you're great in bed on a stall in the ladies room at a bar. That's advertising
2. You go up to an atractive woman at a bar and tell her your great in bed. That's direct marketing.
3. A friend goes up to an attractive woman at a bar and tells her that you are great in bed. That's promotion.
4. An attractive wonam comes up to you and says, "I hear you are great in bed." > > > > >
That my friends, is brand name recognition!

I have a small studio, but I advertise a lot but it's all essentially free.
I print up small 1/4 page flyers and put them anywhere a "show" flyer might be and in all the music stores in town. I also pass them out at shows and whenever I can. I also advertise on message boards and through myspace. So far, this free advertising has worked well enough for me. I plan on buying some advertising at some point because it seems like advertising does work, but not until this method reaches everyone to the point I'm not fully booked any more.

Not to pass the buck, asI am happy to answer any question, but I would like to inform you that past threads have a wealth of information regarding marketing promotion and advertising.
Just type in a key word (eg; advertising)after you select search, which appears below the post poll button towards the top right of the page.
This forum was originally moderating by Chris Stone, who if you are not familiar with, should be. He is "the" master of promotion and marketing without the expense of advertising dollars. Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.....or doomed to watch the History Channel.
