Hello there, i'm new here, so sorry if i don't get it right the first time……

Well, there's a band that really likes the vintage sound (their sound is more like "Stone-Rock" genre) and they want to reproduce the Spector's Wall Of Sound.

And I don't know to much about it as far as it sound was full and punchy.

Any advice on the mic placement is welcome…….

Thanks……

I don't know all the specific details...but Spector's "Wall of Sound" was the result of carefully and slowly assembling players/singers in one room (not a HUGE room)...and then adjusting their balance, live, while they all played at once...not multi-tracking individual tracks and then mixing in the box.

He was mixing LIVE as they played...and it was all about the position of each person in the room, relative to the other people...and how they each played...and how the mics were set, since there was NO isolation involved...as far as I know.

So he would make the musicians play over-and-over, while he adjusted levels and maybe moved people around, a little to the left, a little to the right...etc...
...and that's how he built up his live mix.
Then he just hit RECORD...and the rest is history.

It would take a lot of patience by all...and a lot of work...to get it it set right...but after that...no mixing required...
...what you hear is what you get.

Also...the fact that the room was not HUGE....and it was usually packed with people...there was a natural compression of the sound...all that music going on at once in one room...
...THAT was the "Wall of Sound".

Maybe some other people here have more, or better details.

Gold Star Recording , where most of this happened, is a parking lot...

The website has a lot of info about the Wall of Sound. I agree with Miroslav's summation.

I know a lot of folks say "what's so special about mono?"...
...and I agree that it's not "special" when you think about stereo and surround mixing capabilities.

But what IS special...is that Spector (and some others) managed to get SO MUCH out of that format!

It ain't easy tryin to get a great mix, with 20-30 or more individual instruments and voices, all panned...dead center!

Spector is deaf in one ear? I didn't know that. I did know that Brian Wilson is deaf in one ear, but I had never heard that about Spector.
