Hi,
I'm buying a new sound card and i want to know if anyone has an opinion on the mic preamps or general quality of the presonus firepod compared with the RME fireface.

I'm just curious because the firepod is a good $1000 cheaper so i'd like to know what i'm getting.

Thanx,

adam

I think that you might have answered your own question.

Prosonus is a good company. If you search the internet, you'll find newsgroups where people are discussing this particular product.

RME (along with Lynx) makes some of the best computer interfaces out there. The RME TotalMix and DigiCheck software, both of which are free with any HDSP model RME product, are worth the price pretty much on their own. Again, you can search the web and find users discussing this particular product.

I stress getting imnfo from USERS.

One thing that you have to understand about any firewire or USB product.... they rely more on the host machine's firewire or USB setup than other types of audio cards. So even the best card is not going to perform properly if the machine is not properly set up. Many of the complaints that I see about firewire performance are usually traced back to one of a handful of issues....user error, service pack 2, or a firewire card or chipset that does not follow spec.

Which brings up another point.... if you are going to buy a firewire device, check with the manufacturer, and get a card or chipset that has been tested with the device.

What do you think of Nuendo vs Nuendo2 or 3?

I'm not a Nuendo user. As such, I have not followed the product. I use Sequoia and/or SAWStudio. Sequoia's more popular little brother, Samplitude, is just about to release version 8. Version 6 is available at some really cheap price as a sort of loss leader to try to get you interested in buying a newer version. See the guys at http://www.synthax.com

Most any modern software is going to work for you. What is important to me is the look and feel, and the feature set. I find Sequoia to be the most comfortable and complete for my purposes. If I used a lot of MIDI, I'd probably be looking at Sonar.
