Hey Geniuses - Or Genii, or whatever it is.
So. Portable Recording. I've been looking at dead simple, reliable, small, compact high quality recording for a while now - but never looked hard. I've been considering both digital recorders and old DAT Tape style ones - but it'd need to be high quality inputs.
I'm basically wanting to be able to take a decent condenser mic out into the wild, into my car, onto the bus, etc - without much fuss, and be able to record crisp, clean quality sound. I know it's possible, but don't know many units. While I search, it's probably not a bad idea to post here.
I'm thinking of going down the digital recorder / dat tape line of thinking. No, I'm not going the laptop / mp3 player way - its too much hassle. I don't want more than one cord - that is, from my recorder to mic.
While I'm at it - Anyone know any decent, All-Rounder condensers / dynamics for recording things like this? Everyday sounds. It'd need to be relatively low handling noise, and a nice pickup of quiet sounds before hitting the noisefloor. That always seems to be my main problem with my Studio Projects C3 - Soft sounds are washed up in static, due to needing to gain them so hard.
Obviously, then, this unit would need semi-decent pre's, and probably digital recording (thus decent A/D's). However - I don't want to spend TOO much. I know - you get what you pay for, but still - just to let you know - I'm not going to pay 2 grand :p
S-D or L-D condensers would be ideal - the smaller physically the better. This whole thing is just so I can take a mic, a recorder, and go out somewhere, record things - and take them home and manipulate them. I'm sure you know where I'm coming from.
Ideas?
Cheers-
Nolly

For a mic, check out the Rode NT-4. It's a dual head (90 degree) small diaphram condensor. It runs on phantom power or battery. And it comes with 2 cables - one for going XLR, the other goes to stereo mini plug for going straight into a dat or minidisc. And it sounds great!

With potable DAT recorders being discontinued, this a much taller order than it seems. The leader in the field of portable location recording is Nagra web page They have both analog and digital recorder solutions but it's not inexpensive. And you're not going to come near doing it for $2,000.
I would stay away from the analog ones anyway given the rapid decline of analog tape availability. There are some on ebay in the $500 range. If you haven't had experience operating or mantaining one I would stay away.
Valky mentioned to me at the last AES show that there was no inexpensive solution available for her fienld people at NPR/
