A friend of mine has a new Pro-tools Le set-up that he used only once. I was considering this for the studio, however is this a waste to purchase? I wanted to get tools, this version is cheap to start with. Will this give me quality sound? I know some of the big boys have the more expensive version. What are the differences other than $9,000 bucks. He was going to sell it to me for $800. Good deal or not? Can this version have add-ons? What is supposed to come with the Le set-up? I want to make sure I get everything if I decide to do this.

Need some help thinking.

Thanks,

Jazzman

Sorry for the delay in response. I am still out of town.

It is 002 version.

Can you add to this version, or would they just go to version 003?

He said that he has the ability to transfer the package ownership to me.

Is the price good for what he is asking. What items come with this version?

Thanks again.

Fuck yeah, that's a good price for a 002.

The 001's were going for that much.

I've been using the old 001 for over two years now and I LOVE IT. The fucker rocks, man.

Get the 002, you won't regret it.

If it's the 002 with the faders and all that's an incredible deal. If it's the rackmount version, it's still a good deal.

The 002 is so much better than the 001 - you'd have a good setup either way.

Differences in LE vs Mix (TDM) and HD (HDTDM)?

Tracks, processing, plug-in support.

LE has only 32 tracks playable - not nearly enough for 90% of projects I do (bands with live drum kits), but that may be enough for your usage.

Mix systems can provide 64 tracks.
HD can provide greater than 128.

Mix and HD systems use their own DSP for processing power, so you can achieve excellent plug-in results with very minimal CPU usage. Most TDM plug-ins are more powerful and/or better sounding than non-DSP plug-ins.

Sorry, LE systems are non-expandable. LE stands for limited (some say lite) edition. It is intentionally cripled to place a huge gap between LE and TDM systems.

The system should include ProTools 6.x LE and 002 w/firewire cable and power supply.

protools LE is a great and not too expensive way of getting into protools. i have had a digi001 for ages and it's fine.
i use an HD2 system at work with digidesign converters. the main thing about a bigger more expensive PT system is that you get a bump in quality & options. the converters are better and you have a lot more flexibility in terms of I/O. you can also get a lot more processing power depending on your rig spec and of course you are not limited to 24 or 32 tracks (OS9/10?) and you can go to sample rates of upto 192KHZ should you want to.
anyway, i would say that you can't got wrong with the 002 as long as it all works and you get a good price. if you want to learn protools it's the best way i think. you get more or less the same plugins for LE as you do for TDM/HD setups.

Anyway, I'm still thinking about it. He still has the unit. I will look at the system.

Peace, my friends.
