I thought this will be the perfect place to ask.
We were asked to write a complete jingle (music and text) , record it and deliver it broadcast ready. However, we are not sure how much to charge. We usually only record vocals for jingles. Keep in mind it is a small company and the spot is for TV (European small country)
Thanks in advance.
ps. please,if you reply, please quote what is your experience in this business. No speculation or guessing necessary - we do enough of those. :p
Thanks.

Hi Rob :
That's a good question.
Is this a "buy-out" ? Or, is it going to go through your local musicians union and be subject to scale and residuals for players and singers and voice over artists ?
I have a feeling that you are talking about a buy-out in which case my advise would be not to charge too little, but, to be careful not to lose the contract all together. It really is a fine line and only you can find out what the client can afford.
Just as an example though, one jingle singer in Toronto got $2000 to do a solo-sing on a "buy-out" for a furniture company. Add the musicians and creative on top of that. You can guess what the total for that spot could have been.
What were you thinking of charging ? How many players/musicians are involved ? 25 piece big band ? 1 electronic artist ? How many singers ? 1 or "Take 6" ? Voice over artist ? Even a relative newbee gets $500 minimum ! Creative fee ? $2000 ? or $5000 ?... $10,000.00 ? All right !....$500 :rolleyes:

I can speak to this issue as a composer/producer who has also done many national and international campaigns for just about every major agency.
The previous poster was correct in asking further questions to determine where this spot fits in in the market. However there are concepts that should be taken into consideration regardless of the market for the spot, not the least of which is that whatever rate you charge this time is now your rate for next time, and probably the next.
For regional spots I rareely do anything for less than a 5-8k creative fee plus production and talent.
BTW - as far as talent goes and whether or not it's a SAG, AFTRA, or AFM gig remember this; Buyout does not = cheap. What it does mean is that whatever the talent was going to get over time they get all upfront.
The most important point to remember is this;
The ONLY people to blame for the drop in budgets in our business are the producers, engineers, musicians, etc. who agree to the low fees. You are doing not only yourself but everyone a service when you keep your fees respectable (not gouging).
If you're talking about your project being ALL in then I'm guessing 14-18k for a regional spot (radio & tv) delivered.

Totally agree with the above. In fact , we are constantly suffering from the amateurs who keeps taking the prices down, in voice over works and vocal recording (I'm working with one of the best vocalists in Belgium , who does English , Dutch and French - but we can't really compete with the prices producers get now a days by employing the girlfriend )
But don't forget, regional in Europe is not half as big as regional in the State. I can't even dream to ask 10K for a job like that (vocals & audio only) In any case, seems like I asked to much to this particular client. Good for me for sticking to principals, but damn, we could have used the cash ;(
