I’ve been reading these forums and occasionally posting for years now. The learning experience has been immeasurable. Nowhere else can I sit down for a couple of hours with the best in the business and pick their brains for audio advice and tidbits that usually are only learned by hands-on experience. The quality of my studio work has improved a great deal. Now I’m faced with the unavoidable fact of the inconvenience of my location. There are several studios comparable to mine all operated by guys in just about the same situation as myself in the moderate-sized Midwestern/Southern town in which I live. My problem is that I want to learn and do more than I can here. I know that I’m good at what I do, but I also know I need to keep learning more and keep improving. I also know that I have the capacity to do so, I just need to do it in a place where I can learn and work directly with the people who have the knowledge and skills I want to attain. Those people don’t live in Lexington, Kentucky, or I’ve not met them if they do. I wish it could be that simple.

Please don’t misunderstand…I don’t want to sound like a pompous jackass. I hate sounding like I’m blowing my own horn, but I’m trying to convey that I’m a professional musician and engineer and I know what I’m doing…I’m not just some kid fresh out of school who wants to play at being a musician. I’ve already been working for ten years, but what I’ve learned most of all is that there’s always more to learn, more to do, more people from whom I could learn. I’ve also learned that a whole lot of an engineer’s ability to get ahead is to find a way to work with good people.

I’m at a point in my life where I’m ready to step forward. My soon-to-be new wife and I would like to make a move to a place where we can both take our careers further. We both work in the arts (she’s involved in theatre) and are mutually supportive of one another’s goals. We just need a to find “the” place to go. Much of that depends on where I can find work. I’m prepared to put my own studio on the back burner for awhile and take a job where I can contribute my own skills while learning from the masters of the craft.

I’m asking for advice. I’m also hoping to make some professional contacts who’d like to hear what I can do and perhaps point me in a good direction. I’m putting myself in your hands. I can send CD’s, I can come visit, I can listen. Everybody’s gotta start somewhere and I thought I’d turn to the place I most often turn for advice.

Thanks,

Jason Poff

PS. I’m placing this same post in a couple of different forums, just trying to reach as many folks as possible. Sorry for cross posting…

I'm not sure if relocation is the answer to your dilema. You do however, need to broaden your horizons. I would start by suggesting that you attend the AES convention in San Francisco this year. AES

Get yourself and your wife some tickets to the Mix Magazine TEC awards and get out there and network....
