I've been filling in for the last two weeks as the sound reinforcement mixer at Herb Alpert's Vibrato Jazz Grill. At first I was quite reticent about doing it, but I am having a blast. The club is in Bel Air at top of Beverly Glen Boulevard. Vincent van Haff designed the acoutics and Gary Meyerberg did the audio installation. The place sounds fantastic. Outside of being on my feet for 6 hours after already putting in 6-8 hours mastering during the day it's a piece of cake. Vincent designed the room at Herb's request that no sound reinforcement be needed and for acoustic instrumental music it really is spectacular. Gary Burton did three nights this week and I had a couple of musician types coming up to me saying that the couldn't believe the sound of his vibes was only being picked up by two Sure SM 57's and wanted to know if I had a DI on the vibes. The fact is that the 57's weren't even turned on and there was no direct...just needed to mic the piano a little and turn on and off the annouce mic. I am having a ball....it really is the nicest sounding room I've ever heard for acoustic jazz music and loud too. I've been hearing some great music. The scenery is not bad either, if you know what i mean.
And yes....I know where the SUCK button is....I found it the very first night.

Wow Bill! How long are you gonna be doing that? My band will be in L.A. for a week as of Tuesday, and I know we'd all love to check that out!

mmm yum!
It's a crime to take a mic to a vibraphone if not absolutely necessary- glad you're not guilty!
At a small gig last night outdoors, drums not mic'ed but electric guitars, bass, mic'ed vox, vibes out in front of the mics. You could hear those vibes just beautifully, crystal clear, from a couple hundred feet away, in any direction, long after the amplified stuff was reduced to a murmur... nothing like it! But then there are those awful rooms with low dead ceilings that just eat everything up...
ah the bliss of great acoustics.
Don't mind me, I just followed Lee in here... I follow her around sometimes, can't help it...

Awsome Bill. I have a few of his albums, really great sound. Nice to see someone having a blast with a cool group, and getting a great sound. The best.
