anyone know what the deal is with using a guitar as though it were a midi keyboard(for purpose of using a notation program)?
can you just take a midi pickup from roland and stick it on a guitar, and go right into the pc through a $40 midi interface?
specifically, what do you do to hook up a guitar to finale for pc, in order to let the program notate what you play?

I had the GraphTech Ghost MIDI pickup installed in one of my guitars. I bought Finale and a Tascam US-122 to use as the MIDI interface to complete the job, as I already had an old Roland GR-50 controller.
You need a hex pickup, a controller to turn that hex info into MIDI, a computer MIDI interface, and software. The guitar plugs into the controller via the 13 pin hex cable, the controller plugs into the MIDI interface via a MIDI cable.
Really, in software, "Band in a Box" would work just fine for most people, as few of us ever touch the power of Finale. And BIAB has a lot more to offer, and is significantly cheaper.
You could buy a Roland MIDI pickup (GK-2a), but the Ghost is soooooooooo much better. (I've got the GK, too.) The Ghost uses the same 13 pin cable as the Roland, and plugs right into the Roland boxes and works.
There is a newer Roland box that they showed last year at NAMM... the 20? I forget. I think that it was about $350, though. But you will probably be able to find a used GR-50, GR-9, or whatever for less money.
Another option would be to get a Brian Moore guitar with the built in MIDI pickup. Minimum $700, and you still need all of the other stuff. But you get a cool guitar, too.
It is tricky to install the Ghost, and my luthier built a template to do the work and photo-documented the proceedure... that's how much of a pain it was.
Anyway, you have options. It's not a $40 answer, though.
