I'm starting a basic tracking session today.
I haven't sat in "the chair" for a tracking session since around 1994.....
Despite my protests, the bass player who played with Peter Criss when I was producing him insisted that I engineer these dates that he is producing. Since everyday is a hustle for me. session wise, it's going to be a lot more fun than the wiring job I did for someone two weeks ago.

As long as up and clockwise still makes things louder I should be O.K..

This will be my first tracking date on a SSL J, as well as the fist time I will be recording basics without a tape machine rolling.....

I'll keep you posted.....

Bill

Hey Bill,

I've been in that position a few times lately - old clients insisting that I brush off the cobwebs (actually almost called you about studio time).

In doing so, I remembered my old attitude of "attack the console", which gave me the mindset of paying alot more attention to it than I might otherwise, seeing/doing things I might forget about - clicks, headphones, busses, patches, etc. It's a total high.

I also make no bones about telling the (client and the) 2nd enginner the truth, and to watch my ass to prevent any fuckups. Haven't been any close calls yet, and everyone has a good time with it. I get reminded and amazed at how fun and easy it is to make music when a bunch of actual musicians are involved! ;\)

I always end up surprising myself, the 2nd, and the client, and end up thinking - man that was FUN! I should do that more often. Then months go by and I remember why I "transitioned" in the first place...

Anyway, good luck, and hopefully you'll get more of the the fun stuff!

Joel

Didn't you get the memo Bill? Up is now softer, and counterclockwise is now louder - and they're both on the same control. Have fun figuring things out! ;\) \:D

Seriously, it's cool to hear that you're going to be doing some tracking after such a long hiatus. Are you doing it over at Paramount or...? Tracking to Pro Tools? Keep us posted!

It all went well and was kinda fun. I never worked in the room before and not really used to their mic collection but it went up really fast, things went along quite well and finished ahead of schedule. Oh yeah...and if I do say so myself...sounded pretty damn good!

Things that really made it all a lot easier:
1. The drummer, Ryan Brown
2. Mytek Private Cue sysem
3. Yamaha sub kick mic (used in addition to the another mic inside the drum was AWESOME!)
4. Studio C @ Paramount is one of the best sounding rooms for drums I've ever worked in. While not overly live. it sounds massive.
5. Paramount 2nd engineer Nick Fournier, who did a great job keeping it all organized, especially being able to tell the producer which takes he preciously liked and in what order.....you can't teach that!

Anyway, as I've said for a long time, if I could make the kind of money I'm used to making recording live musicians I'd still be doing it.

The only trouble I had on day one was trying to anticipate the producer speaking to the drummer and pressing the talkback at the right time ( the producer didn't want to be bothered with a remote talkback). It came back to me by the end of the day but there were several exchanges where neither party could hear the other due to my ineptness......
It made me laugh though and brought back hundereds of other previous talkback stories that I could relate....but won't right now.

A great drummer in a great room on a great kit just can't be beat. It ALL starts right there, and if it's not "right" there, all the work to fix it later is going to wind up giving you less than the best insofar as final results.

A great second who keeps track of all the details without being asked or having to be told what to do all the time - who anticipates your needs and is on top of them - is someone who is going to go places.

I've been wanting to give that new Yamaha Sub Kick a try... how does it compare with the NS10 woofer technique?

Someone needs to invent a better talkback approach... of course a remote would have made things easier on you and probably improved communications reliability, but if the producer doesn't want to use it, well, you've gotta do what you've gotta do... I've got a few talkback horror stories of my own. \:\)

One of these years I'm going to have to get out of the IE / 909 and get out there and take you to lunch Bill... in exchange for a tour of the new digs of course. ;\)

Speaking of get togethers, looks like we're going to be doing a Musicplayer BBQ / jam / get together out here at my place on Sunday August 1st - Lee Flier's band is going to be playing IPO the day before, and we thought that since they were going to be in town, it was a good excuse for another get together. Would love to have you join us if you can make it. I'll post more as we get the details hammered out.
