Boggs here. Some of you may know me from other forums. I am a member of a forum that creates backing tracks to jam to so we can share our own creations among each other. We import the backing track into our home recording software and add another track to it and submit it.

I have had an ongoing problem (using Vegas) with latency. I have disabled the virus shield and task scheduler which run in background before recording, but there is always a delay between my track and the backing track on playback (1/4 to 1/2 second or so). I have about a 520MHz (or thereabouts... I can't remember exactly) AMD processor with Windows 98 and 320 Meg of RAM. I am on a cable hookup (RoadRunner). What other info do you need? I have a 32-bit sound card (older one) the name of which I cannot remember. Any ideas?

Any modern soundcard with WDM drivers (make sure you have the hotfix for Win98SE) should be able to get you to 10ms or less latency. That is fairly usable. 3ms and lower is difficult to notice. If Vegas doesn't support WDM, good ASIO drivers will get you in the same area. You're probably using MME drivers and they are not known as a low latency driver.

Thanks, NE-One. As I am not the most computer literate guy in the world, I will take this information to a friend of mine who is and find out how to check this all out. I do appreciate your taking the time to feed me this information. I will follow up on it. Your time will not have been wasted. ;\) Boggs
