Well one of my Tascam DA88 machines took a dump a couple of months ago. New basket with heads required payola at around $800.00+!!!!!!!!!!!

The new heads are around $500.00 plus the rest of the cash is going for the installation, testing, check out, specs, etc.

I'm very pleased with my units, but I have another one that will bite the dust next year I think and will cost the same. I put it through some internal tests and have found that the second machine is still healthy.

Has anyone had any issues with their recording gear. How about ADAT gear? Any issues with them?

Replacing heads on DTRS machines is simply part of the price of doing business. It's not an issue, simply part of the maintenance budget. If you look at hourly billings, you'd spend more time (that is, money) keeping a 2" machine aligned and working well over the same length of time; it hurts to have to pay it out all an once, though... It seems like I'm only paying around $500-$600 for heads, but that may be a regional thing (or you could talk to Don Kruse at Music Row Technology, in Nashville). I've replaced most of my DA-88's with DA-78's; I expect them to need new heads at some point, but they will certainly have earned enough to make that a good deal.

People with DAWs should plan obsolescence into their HDDs, too. After a couple of years of being run around, I consider their reliability below half-life. Plus, the newer ones tend to be faster, larger and more efficient.

As Dave mentioned, it should be considered part of doing business.

Thanks, AM for the response, but I thought I was going to able to just have the heads replaced not the whole basket. There was another fella at the shop told me that they may be able to "shave down the heads". I thought he was loosing it! But I didn't say a thing. He also said that the "Heads could just be replaced" I again thought that the heads could be replaced with having to replace the whole basket, saving me some cash.

If this could be done I think the folks just take the easy way out by adding tyhe cost to my ticket with a new basket, while only needing to take an hour to install the basket. If that's the case they just made about $400 off of me...am I wrong?

I never heard any pro tell me that the heads could just be replaced.

My appologies, Jazzman... I scanned over the part about the whole basket assembly. But, that got me thinking what is so different about the flying assembly over any other DAT unit, or VCR. If the clutches are working well, then they should be able to just replace the head unit,a s you said.

I found this web page showing how easy it is to remove and clean... Tangible-Technology.com - SWABBING THE DECK . From reading throughthis technician's list, sounds like they should be replacing the head and cleaning the clutches.

If they didn't indicate your machine had abnormally worn parts, they probably just are taking the easy and expensive-to-you way out. I hope that's not what they are doing.
