Hello Everyone! I currently don't have a sub for my near-fields. I'm concerned with my low bass and sub-harmonic info. in my mixes. My question is, can I use my Grado headphones to monitor this information. I know thi may not be the "ideal" situation...but will it work!? Thanks for all the help!!
Whatever helps you determine as to what's going on, use it. We all find our special and unique ways. A real time analyzer might be a good investment. I can sometimes tell a lot by just looking at the excursion of the woofer on my speakers.....it really can tip you off to subharmonic content, and DC that you may not be able to hear. ed c

One cheap solution I've seen used is to get a boom box - the type with built in subs (JCV make a good one with dual subs) - and to output to that from your mixing desk - and then crank the hell out of the subwoofer control - and reference the bass level/content against other mixes. This is not ideal - but will give you reasonable access to those lower frequencies that your near fields can't reproduce.
