Jeeze, am I the only guy left NOT running snare through a Sans Amp or backing vocals through some crappy discontinued pedal? Sh*t every single interview I read these has the producer bleating on and on about using stomp boxes for evrything. Christ, they are even making sure their photos for the interviews have em all lined up in the background!

These articles are a trick - you get the "I use stomp boxes" article, then the "I go direct to tape with no more that 3ft of monster cable and a pre-amp if I have to" article, then the "i go digital from the mic plug all the way back out to 'digital' speakers (whatever those are), then the "I only use analog"...
It is all a big trick cooked up by the music so that some won't realize that good music can transcend almost any attempt at engineering it into a box.

It's discouraging and it reminds me of the PC mhz wars. My 550mhz isn't good enough anymore? I would have drooled if someone had said 550 only two short years ago! All these little things bombarding you trying to convince you that you can't do a good job without this or that... It's frustrating and I'm guilty of falling for it occasionally... It's probably what's fueled the semipro market, so maybe it's driving prices down somewhat... Who knows. It's a commercial society.

Jules,
I emailed Line6 and asked if they were planning on making a "host-based" version of the Amp Farm. There response was 'no', that the POD was for host-based systems, and the Amp Farm was for TDM.
I guess that would mean they're pretty similar in sound. I would also guess that the A/D converters in a TDM system would be a lot better than those built into the POD.

Sans amps are crap for direct guitars - but a drum track really does get nice and "Bitey" through one. But you would never use just the processed sound - blend it in with the rest of the kit and you'll get some bonus meat.
Bass guitar through a sans can be quite gnarly, too. Carefull, subs can creeps in and your ns-10s wont tell you.
Vocals through a pedal? Im not gonna try it. I did when I was at school, and it sounded bad. What pedals are these producers talking about? Boss pedals?!? surely not...
POD kicks ass. J Station not bad either. If you only put guitars through these thing you are mising some tasty flavours.
Heres a great cheap box for everything - Yamaha FX500. Great distortions, usuable modulations, and a few verbs too. I ran a drum track through a "TURBO LEAD" dist. and got the phattest beat that totally inspired new things for the song. Next week I tried it again, and it sounded so amature and obviously lo fi in a bad way. Tweak and discover.... dont rule it out.

shit, ill use anything. its all just process. sometimes it works, most of the time it doesnt. but when it does, its cool as shit.
but i always add it later.
