ive been a semi-pro musician for 20 years...with all this pro tools and digital talk(im really not up on all this technology)it can be a little intimadating.i bought a mackie 1604.an alesis adat.a re-20 mic.an sm 58...3 sm57s....(are these good for drums??) my first project studio....i have a room thats 25 x 30..with 12 ft cielings..and movable partitions 'semi dead sounding...plus a control room. with minumal equipment... with mic placement(i love to do this..im getting great guitar sounds....and drums)im hoping its possible to make a quality(by quality i mean technical) recording??. i have tons of vintage amps and guitars....yet im clueless about compressers..... should i record dry then add compression??.what is a good low budget compresseor??.is it needed??? ......i was thinking of an a/t 4033....would this be a wise choice for vocals???? as for effects.....i have a quadraverb....to me everything sounds better without it. the room sound and amp sound seem to be enough..

good INEXPENSIVE compressor is the RNC (ReallyNiceCompressor). $199 for stereo http://www.fmraudio.com it even has an idiot button called SuperNice.

the AT4033a will be nice for vocals with what you have already. not much money either.

Aside from everything else, I would go with the 4050, more versatile (omni, figure 8, cardiod), plus to me, it is smoother, and less harsh than the 4033. I don't believe there is a big difference in price, either. In terms of the other stuff, if it sounds right, it is right.....depending how it sounds tomorrow.

So if I understand you right, aside from everything else, you would go with the 4050, because it's more versatile (omni, figure 8, cardiod), plus to you, it is smoother, and less harsh than the 4033?

Yes, I think that what Ed is saying is that the versatility of the 4050 (Omni, Cardioid, Figure 8), and its smoother sound (than that of the 4033) are why he would choose it.

How many Ed Cherney's does it take to post a note about 4050's ....oops, this one should probably go in the studio jokes thread.
