I have seen alot of new mikes, like everything else, they claim to be close to the big boys but for about a tenth the price. Now i know you probably can't expect the same quality, but is anything close? I would rather have a good mike for a couple few hundred, than the best for a couple thou.

One exceptional mic I've found is the Shure KSM32 studio mic. Here's a case where the ads and reviews are pretty much right, it's a very good mic for a lot of different applications. Street price is around $550. Eliott

Cheap? that's my language. I don't record any major acts or anything and I got a pretty basic mic arsenal. 3 D112's 6 shure 57 2 shure 58 2 Marshall somethings, lol ( they are ultra cheap rhodes/neumann copies) 1 senneiser 604 2AT 4047 Most was bought online, get some kick ass prices from folks who will deal, unlike our local music stores who look you in the ye and say with a straight face, 119 bucks is as low as we can go on this shure 58, (grrroan!) oh and that site you mentioned, shreveaudio.com does trade ins too, i got a kick ass EP on the way along with two PVM22's thanx for the hookup!

I have a pair of KSM-32's on the way. I got to borrow a pair a while back and they seemed to do well on everything (esp. drum OHs).
DaSongWriter- I have a friend who works at an average-sized music store, and he said they really don't make much money on 57s and 58s, even when they sell them for over $100. The Musician's Buddy-type places buy an incredible amount and can get away with selling a 57 for $80.

Cash, yeah I realize the guys don't make that much on mark-up, but it's turning into a world where someone will make the deal with you, and make a few bucks at a time, just so you'll come in again for your next thing be it cable EP, FX, ETC. LOL. It's like the places that give away guitar picks. Everybody needs em, and when you got a choice that wants up to 50 cents apiece for em, and a place down the road that wants to GIVE them to you just so you will come inside, when you are ready for the big buy, as we all have to sometimes, where you gonna go? I will remember and patronize the place that wated my REAL business so bad, they gave away some stuff to get it. After my experience with the one store that wants to charge for picks and 119 bucks for a shure 57/58, I only go back once in a while when I am absolutly choiceless. But that is capitalism. Shift, change, adapt, or get left in the dust. 57' and 58's sell like hot cakes, and it is one of those things the dealers should take into account. Everybody wants to save a buck, but everybody will eventually buy something anyway. Meantime, I will go for the savings, and those who reach out to me the furthest get my biz, and I really can't feel too bad for them. Maybe it's bad attitude, and doesn't support the locals, but hell, I need to save bucks like the next guy.

Well ,the battle rages in another thread in this forum about the new Marshall 2001 MXL, and it happens to be a couple of different mags. The way I see it, you can't really expect soemthing thats cheap to compete with a 2000 neumann or something of the ilk, but according to the reviews, though mixed, I don't thinkk you can really go too wrong for 150 bucks if it's close. ghostdancer said he found it for 150 at shreveaudio.com and fot 165 at sweetwater.com. I might give one a shot, but if you do before me, howsabout letting me know what you think of it? Especially the low end.
