Ed,
Is there any way that all of us engineers could put together a petition, and send it to all the major equipment manufacturers demanding they put programable recall/reset on everything new they release like what's on the Summit "MPE200", and the old Drawmer "M500". Examples:Universal Audio's "1176", and "LA-2A"! dbx "160S"! Drawmer "DL241"etc.! Can you imagine how much more efficient our work would be if everything in the studio were at least recallable internally. Have everything set up to at least accept MIDI program changes. But, implement this in a way where the audio signal is uncompromised, and there are no blurps caused by program changes!
To the rest of my engineer croonies out there, what's your take on this, and would you sign such a petition?

Gee, so that would mean EVERY piece of gear would have to be ALL Digital, or Digital Controlled Analogue, or MIDI Controlled?
How do you plan to retrofit this idea on all the stuff that already exists without it?
AND, I THOUGHT this was a Free Country. So how will a Petition do anything, except SUGGEST to the Manufacturers that this is what the signers want.
I think we should let all the Manufacturers do what they want, and vote in the marketplace, by buying or not buying what appeals to us.

T.M.F.,
Digitally controlled analogue, with MIDI programability implemented is what I was proposing. I was'nt implying doing retrofits, just new product. It is a free country but, not a totally free world. I did this because alot of manufacturers won't do it unless they see that cats want it. I agree about voting in the market place but sometimes you've got to tell them in other ways. But, how do you vote on something that may not already be in existence, which is not the case here but, could be for product in the future. I sometimes wonder if anyone talked to Bob Moog about the concept of MIDI before it was implemented.

Ed,
Please tell these people that run this post that it's posting twice when you command it to only post once. Another thing maybe it has something to do with the server in my area, or something else but when I type in here, and the margins are even before I send a message it comes out crooked on the post. I'm an audio engineer not a computer/internet tech.. Please address this, or have someone who runs this post reply to this.
Thanks,
Quantum!

Total session reset was a major factor for me to decide to move over to 'all DAW' operation. I go into my DAW via vintage, high end analog stuff. After that it's recallable in every way, bringing up a new song chock full of edits and plug ins take less than 2 mins. On analog, recalling 24 or 48 track stuff, or just geting r mix levels was getting me down on analog.... that and I couldn't afford a studer 827 and a 60' neve console and wanted to open my own studio.
DAW's rock 4 recall!

Julian standen,
I agree with you about the DAW's man . I'm a fan of Pro Tools. Been one for awhile. But my priorities are different. Most of my time, when I've got work, it's spent in a production/engineering role instead of that of studio ownership. I was just thinking of ways that the production process could be streamlined. I also would like to recall setups on the same equipment that you described that you put before your DAW. I just put this up here because I know it's not impossible to implement. A Summit "MPE200" is not some cheesy piece of gear("Kit" as the English call it). If they(the manufacturers)can put it on that high spec. device, why not others.
