Dear EQ,

My question has to do with something about the way certain recordings sound that
is difficult to describe. For example, I just listened to a CD done on some fantastic
home equipment (Tascam 8-track reel to reel/Mackie mixer/lots of sound modules and effect accessories etc.). The tracks sound good. They are clean and the playback levels are equal to other commercial recordings I compared them to. Still, something which I can’t quite put my finger on sounds different than the commercial CD. I know this is probably difficult for you to determine without knowing all the gear and circumstances involved, but what I’m generally trying to find out is what is it about these home recordings that makes them sound different?

Not that they sound bad but just that they tend to sound different to me. What is this
difference I’m hearing? I know that this particular CD was sent to a mastering lab, and yet I still seem to detect this subtle difference. With all the great gear on the market these days I’ve read and heard many say that it’s becoming more and more difficult to distinguish home recordings from those done in major studios. I’m sure that this is true to some extent, yet for me I’m still searching to find out what exactly it is I’m hearing that’s missing.

Hi Lincoln:

This is a good question for Ed Cherney ("Behind the Big Board") and/or George Massenburg ("Ask George Massenburg") These are the guys with the ears and the thousands of hours of critical listening to their credit. I will send them an email and ask them to check out your question. Thanks for participating in the MPER forum

I think people's ears are better than they give themsleves credit for.

A higher noise floor, a little distortion - I mean stuff you don't really hear in an up front way - just back there lurking around subliminally, are potential culprits. Bad gain structure, cheap cables, little ground loops, old drum heads, bad room sound - they all add up to subtle degradation.

Poorly arranged or poorly written songs are probably another huge factor; less than exceptional musicians as well.

Probably not much about the equipment. Cut any of these forum hosts loose with that gear, some ace musicians and some good tunes, and I'm sure it will dismay you even further.
