Dear Ed,

How are you miking Leslie cabinets these days. I'll have one in a fairly small space
12' x 15'. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mr. A

Good one! Mic's oposite or on a corner?, bass mic too? Compression?
Re hammond, I assisted on a session where Steve Winwood came in as a hired session player as a favour for an Island records friendly producer...(this was pre his MTV housewifes choice make over days, 83/84) Any way, he asked for a sheet of paper to make notes. As the track was played he, with perfect pitch, wrote the chords and stucture down. Went in, and on the first pass had most people in the control room in extasy (I knew he was warming up and as assitant I wasn't quite so attached to the music as the artist engineer & producer, all of whom were hopping up and down) He was asked if he wanted to hear it, he declined and said he would nail it second time round, he did, then did the same for two other songs and left.
Super cool...It was fun to push record on that one.

We had a mint 1959 Hammond in the last studio I worked, and I had really good lucking getting great sounds from that thing.

Hang with me here, some of my terminology might get a little technical.

On the bottom rotating thingie I hung a 421, and on the top rotating horn thingie I hung a Beyer M-88.

The M-88 was on the recommendation of a friend and I really, really liked it.

I managed to get some decent isolation and went to two separate tracks.

That was for a standard Hammond Leslie. But we also had a Mesa Boogie Guitar Leslie and that was very difficult to mic (if you've seen the thing, you know why).

OK Bob this is for you. I put it in a fairly small live room and hung a Blumlein dead center over the top of it to catch it's relections only. No direct mic'ing.

My favorite instrument...

(well maybe)

U87, or 414 on top to track one, U87 or 421, or RE-20 on bottom, track two, and if I'm lucky enough to be in a big wharehous-y type room, a good omni condenser about 50' away... pan the direct left, and the room mic right, sit back and enjoy the show.. If the track doesn't call for that type of dramitic movement.. two room mics, one hard left, one hard right, top and bottom mics up the middle...

i love a leslie in mono...

I'm still waiting for someone to strap a wireless mic to the horn itself.. you know to "fix" that pesky vibrato......

LOL

How about two condensers, (I'm not particularly choosey; whatever sounds best and you have around. Maybe KM-84s) out of phase (phase reversed on the console) on the front top and back top, facing each other, panned to opposite sides, Left and Right.

Then, contrary to popular opinion that bass is non-directional, two large diaphragm mics, like U-47s, in a similar fashion, or on the SIDES of the Leslie, not the front and back.

Also, for that "Muscle Shoals" sound, you can shut off the rotation of the bottom speaker mechanism, and just mic that with ONE U-47 or similar, placed in the center of the stereo spread.

I read this idea somewhere a while ago, and stole it, and there was a real good explaination on why the doppler effect was increased, but I don't quite remember what it was. It made perfect sense at the time, so that's why I tried it, and it sounded real good.

Don't forget, if you have access to the preamp, or to the "dry" input on the reverb unit on the Hammond, to try putting an electric guitar, or other signal into that, and freaking out at the sound of it coming out of the Leslie. (You can get it by cutting into the cable, too, but I have NO idea which wires to use for that).

It's incredible on guitar, and works a lot better than the "effect box Leslies" on other instruments and vocals.

Try it, even if you don't mic the cabinet, just to hear the effect.

It's better than drugs!!

Bob.. I discover that type of euphoria on a different route..
we were rehearsing for an album, just everyone in a room, no headphones, and the bass player didn't have an amp, so we pulled out ol' Les. changed the feel abd direction of the whole session. Unbelieveable effect..

the git through it sounds great. and double tracked its even better. A trick i use is to take the git track and run that through it and then to pan the org git l and the miced les to the right srv did that and sounded great.

Well, I'm glad you guys have done the "other stuff through the Leslie" routine.

And I hate to sound like a broken record and keep jumping back in time, but let's give credit where credit is due.

This technique was first developed by George Martin and The Beatles, with Geoff Emerick engineering.

AND they were tripped out at the time.

Hello All,
I had a wonderful session just the other day, I recorded my first B3 organ overdub, using a SM58 on the top and an AT4033 on the bottom. In addition, I don't know if this had anything to do with the great sound I got, but here it is. I had the leslie placed in a corner with back part of the leslie against the wall, with the mics placed right in front of the leslie. I also used the Soundcraft 200B mixer with the DBX166 compressor not hitting it much at all, just for gain reasons. I hope this may help someone. PEACE

Well, you know when you place a speaker against a wall, you get an increased bass response. When you place it on the floor, same thing. When you place it in a corner, even more.

So, the Leslie on the floor, in a corner, against the wall must have made you feel a bit like having balls made of Jello.
