Sorry, I dont have an answer for you, just in the same boat, Ive heard some good things said about the presonus, but like you would love to hear from someone using one or a recomendation, as the pre is critical and its dead easy to throw away cash on soso equipment. Please help soon as im in need like yesterday......

The last opinion on the presonus was from an engineer i reallt trust and he said, " IT SOUNDS GOOD ENOUGH FOR LIVE STUFF, BUT I WOULDN'T WANT TO PUT IT TO TAPE.."
Nuff said, I think

Alfa, you realy cant go wrong with a 4 channel API, (4231) use Kick snare and 2 OH. Or a more buget option 2 x HHB radius valve 4 way mic pre amps.
An HHB 4 way + an API 4 way would be a v cool combo. You could mix n match you might prefer the kick via the valves or vice versa... Use the API for multi mic elec gtr / bass /keyboard overdubs and use the HHB for vocals / acc overdubs (it's cheap enough not to be a wast of the 3 other channels while doing single mic stuff) and it's a killer vocal mic pre.

I've got a True Audio Precision 8 that I use for drums that is really nice - reviewed by Roger Nichols I believe a while back - check the archives or their site.
I also am submixing toms from it into an Oram Octamix and it is dead clean. If the Oram pres are as nice as that unit, I'd say they'd be worth a go.
I got both units from Sweetwater and I bet they'd let you return/exchange if you didn't like it.
Talk to Frank Pycha at SW - he's a good guy and has been really helpful to me.

they assigned me some guy @ SW and hes a total ass. and their too expensive and dont give good deals. i got something in the mail one time about any one product @ cost and what i asked for was above what i could get it elsewhere. they do send out nice catalogs though.
i heard the HHB 50 sounds not so good. i just dont know. for $320 for 4 pres is pretty damn cheap. probably worth trying even though somebody didnt like the sound, i might.
i did hear the precisions were nice.
do those api mic pres have backmounted phantom power switches??? is it a pain if they do??
i was looking at the 212Legacy API pres. getting that 8 space rackmount for them.
im just trying to get something fat sounding for the drums. i dont give a fuck @ transparency if the color lends nicely to a beefy drum sound. API boards always give me a good drum sound. i was thinking of something tube however for the metals, smooth them out, they are just doo damn harsh with digital. imagine sticking your ear right up to a hat or a crash while somebody is striking it. gotta have tube smear.
i was thinking of earthworks for room mics/pre.

I have a Presonus MP20 and an Oram Octasonic. I like and use both of them on my recording projects. Sound good to me. I've owned a few great mic pres over the years, these hold their own. It's worth checking out the 3D Audio CD. I have it but haven't done the listening test yet. No matter what you decide after hearing the CD though, remember that the sound you get depends on mic placement technique, mic choice, and of course, the source. Mileage may vary and almost always does. I think the mic matters more than the pre, myself. Eliott Wateree Studio

Still getting great drum sounds with Midi fatKat pads into dual Kurzweil racks, with good samples>> and then mixed thru HHb 40 series tube pres...certainly easy to recall an exact sound a client is listening for and simple to tweak...

Cymbals to digital = ribon mic's! Royer stereo ribbon & a huge valve mic pre = the best sound I have ever heard. Phantom on API aint that difficult to deal with... Jules

i case anyone is curious, ive decided to get the hhb radius 40. its so cheap that if i cant use it in my studio, i will certainly drag it around to record live shows. the main complaint of it was its noise which would be the least of my concerns at a live show.
im also holding out on serious pres until i get the 3D audio CD. the sytech 4 channel pre is a contender now as the reviews are good and it is in the shootout. the api 3124 is running also, the prescision 8 is also still on the list.
how do you deal with the phantom power in the back??? you just leave it on? i thought i could do that and do an xlr patchbay for the micline to preinputs, i would never cross the ground so constant phontom would be okay then.
i just got the royer 121 ribbon. i was thinking about the stereo for drum overheads. but do you find it picking up way more of the toms/snare than would like with a single center placed mic? are you putting overhead or more in front or more behind the drummers head?

Above the kit as low as possible, apparently Fletcher and a few others like them facing the kit just above tom level almost vertical.. I will get a royer stereo once more on trail to see if it does for me in the drum booth I am having built. If it's cool I will get it and try to get a big tube pre for it too. API phantom reach round and 'click'! Jules
