Ed, I read about you mixing the Fabulous Thunderbirds live show for a DVD audio release in 24 bits. I've also read that many record companies are holding their DVD audio releases until at least July when Pioneer will release their DVD Audio players. My question is: I understood that DVD players had 24/96 converters and could read and play not only regular CDs but the new DVD audio discs. If this is true, what's so special about a DVD audio player that would make me shell out $1000 more? The initial units won't have the encrypton standard (that's yet to be fianlized). Thanks, Eliott Wateree Studio

The currently available DVD players will not play back the new DVD-Audio discs. DVD-Audio is a "new" standard that uses different sampling frequencies and data compression techniques. The current DVD players will only play back 48 or 96K while the new DVD-Audio players will play back 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, and 192K. The current DVD players will decode Dolby Digital and DTS surround formats while the new DVD-Audio players will play back "MLP" surround. "MLP" is a "lossless" data compression format that gives you back all the information that you put into it, while Dolby Digital and DTS are "lossy" compression formats, that don't give back all the information you put into them. These are just a few of the differences. In a word, the new DVD players will sound better!
