Ed...this just in>>>recent statements by the US Nationaly Archives and Records Administration suggest that "the lifespan of a CD is 3 to 5 years. The main problem is that the aluminum substratum is vulnerable to oxidation." this complied from the Science and Tech Dept. Carnegie PA Any thoughts on this?

Yeah, I find they last a lot longer when you don't put your coffee cups on them and use them for coasters UNTIL they don't play anymore!!

Can't oxidation only occur when metal is directly in prolonged contact with air? Wouldn't the plastic molding be enough of a barier? I don't know the scientifics, but I sure wish my 15-year-old Cutting Crew disc would stop playing.

ditto. i got some that old too and that have been used as coasters that still play. just buff out the scratches, the layer is closer to the top anyways.

In light of this thread I feel compelled to plug a great product I discovered at my local dept store called the Disc Doctor. It is supposed to resurface scratched discs and by golly it works! It has repaired literally over 40 discs that skipped or wouldn't play (you know, after dropping them face down in the car while driving and grinding them into the floor of my filthy '86 Bronco with my feet as I blindly fish for them with one hand and all the while trying to keep my eyes on the road.)

Anyway, except for being made out of very flimsy plastic, it works great for $30 and I figure it's saved me a ton of $$$ if I ever felt inclined to replace my skipping discs. Maybe it will even fix an old AOL 2.0 coaster!!!
