Ed & whats your approach to mixing 5.1 for DVD from 2 track masters I've read a few interesting articles on the subject but would be very interested in how you would go about it.

Hi Blackwon88, Oh yeah, 5.1 from stereo. I have not done it yet. I have seen film mixers doing it for their DVD releases, when they only have stereo stems to work from, and I have seen black boxes that do this very thing. I do not know who makes them, but I will confer with my "panel of experts". In terms of 5.1 for music only, there are absolutely ways to do it, but in involves creating ambience and EQ and phase tricks to create a quasi surround. Ultimately, I don't know how dramatic you can make it, as you cannot treat individual instruments. A fear of many producers and engineers is to eventually see stereo catalogue product from major labels that have been labeled "re-channeled to 5.1", that has not been reviewed or remixed by the original people that made the music in the first place, and somehow made into multichannel from the stereo masters, or worse yet, 2'nd or 3'rd generation copies. My fear is that if it is done wrong, people will hear these and conclude that 5.1 is no big deal and a waste of time and money to buy, when the tructh is that when it is mixed right, can be totally engaging and compelling. I will get back to you with some of the techniques that people have been using to simulate 5.1 ec

Thanx Ed getting ready to tackle this fall on some of my direct to 2track masters been thinking about ways to just use ambience in the rear speakers one thing though i will be tracking the vocals on separate tracks on top of the finished master so at least i can play with the that as a seperate entity. I know i can isolate the bass enough for the LFE chan just to put a lil bump on the bottom. The center chan i can put the singer Maybe setting up some room mics and try catching some sound of the music off the wall and bringing it back in and playing with the phase might do something good. It's wierd though back in the eighties i had a pair of ear phones that would short out and it would provide a very intersting surround effect Hmmm... Im sure soon we will all have to figure this out because somethings are not available to go back and remix so we will have just the 2trk masters to deal with "back to cutting teeth and having to experience fun all over again". Learning new stuff, aw hell, I thought we all know enough. One thing though, when you are trying to split out your stereo to surround, I believe that it is very important that you use some sort of bass management system....at least it will let you know how your subs are being derived from the rest of your program material.
