I've got a extensive Pro Tools set up. With 16 faders of Pro Control. Working in studios with huge desks I always thought they were sort of rediculous. Wheeling over to one end where you aren't in the monitor 'sweet spot', standing on one leg with a knee on the faders, to get to the mic pre's on a Focusrite desk, the nearfields becoming 'far fields with the meter bridge being so far away, a waste of electronics when using one channel for an overdub, getting your face cooked by a red hot Neve or SSL. etc etc. I've got 64 tracks , two people can get on the desk and move faders at the same time and I don't have to wheel nowhere! Also if an act felt like it we could rent a country house and set up there in no time at all.
Now when I see huge long SSL's I just laugh & shake my head.

But they look really, REALLY cool. So what if it's not needed? If I had millions I'd build 2 cool rooms with large-format desks. Snoopy said it best: "The key to life is looking good at a distance." Large format desks can be resolved at a great distance by the human eye. If someone at 100 yards sees you in front of your Pro-Tools rig, all they're going to assume is that you're downloading porno. If someone at 100 yards sees you in front of a 9000j or a 9098i, or an OXF-R3 (my current choice) they'll KNOW you're cool. Rich...

you make a great point but to wow a client or just to get on with what gives you the best control of the sounds? is the question

All that matters is looking good at a distance. If Snoopy said it it HAS to be true (this was Pre-Pru also). Sound? Audio integrity? Who cares. Just gimme lots of knobs and lotsa lights. Rich...

The Pro Control has several diagniostic, "test' modes, one gets all faders & lights freaking out, it's called "VEGAS" mode as it look like a fruit mashine on Jackpot. I show the bands I work with this and they are eating out of my hand! That and the two flatscreen monitors seal the deal. Snoopy would go run and hide under the bed for a day as he did not learn such things at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. Jules

And that's another thing. Large format desks don't have "Vegas mode." It's Not needed. MINIONS are already impressed by their SHEER SIZE and do not need a tiny, little light show to impress them.
And, let's face it. No one liked Dan Tanna in the '80's, and no one likes him now, either.
PLUS, the OXF-R3 has SEVEN flat-screen LCD's.

The 'focus on Miami' in this months Mix features 3 Pro Control facilities and discussed precisly this threads heading, it makes an interesting read. I find at facilities with those huge desks, the clocks whiz round faster, I'm happy that the buget for simple overdubs and mixing is going into my pocket not another studios. It's a trend. Josh all you want! I refer to it as "Track 'n Go".

Miami should be avoided at all costs these days due to residual pepper-spray from the Elian raid. It's shown to be harming the environment and is considered the main trigger-mechanism in recent unsual meteorological happenings. And stop calling me JOSH. Rich...

I have a 72 input console and it looks ok for size but I still have people go with the ssl studio just cause "they can offer something different" the best offer is, to take more of your money offer I say and get the same sounds or close to. but when there 3rd album comes around and they owe lots of money cause they didn't sell a million albums or so then they come to me an say "we were told you could get a great sound at a good price" I say yah but I thought you were rock mogals. venting, just burns me the "if its not done on a ssl it't never gonna get played" idea what do you guys think?

I have a friend who is experienceing that very problem. He works 2 miles from the biggest metropolitan area in the US and sometimes finds that even a 9098i isn't enough because it doesn't say "SSL" on it. But it's still wicked cool because it's BIG, it's HEAVY, and it generates TONS OF HEAT.
If nothing else he can iron clothes on the top of the meter-bridge, and roast chestnuts on it around the holidays.

Dont you guys agree that, essentially, given the llimitations of the end format, and the fact that radio squases the crap out of everything ( lets not even mention the MP format) that once you get into pro gear, console choice is more a matter of preference than actual sonic integrity?
Jules, if yuou are comfortable with PT, knock yourself out, Rich, if yuou need a large console, go for it. hey, haven't we all done things that wern't based anything on sound quality or budget to get a good performance? ( like giving that rapper/punk guy a Sm58 and some floor monitors out in the room just so he's comfy?"
IF you are relaxed, you mix better.
And by the way, I am a PT user, and there is no good reason not to go large format other than budget. IMHO
dim thos lights, peg those meters!

Don't switch off the big desks... EVER. Especially when I need my laundry dried. Handball is not an option on an SSL 9000j unless you get the optional DustCover/ClayCourt. Oddly enough, that is manufactured by Alan Smart, too. But when you order it, it can not be installed without first being appointed by a crew of 4 poncy British engineers who will both level, and polish it. But it's better than trying to convince your clients you have a real recording environment when you were just using your "desk" to play Tetris. (sorry, couldn't resist). Rich...
