Ed,

I'm considering getting an Apogee Rosetta
96K A/D converter. I want to hook it up to a Digidesign 001. I want to use the Rosetta at 88.2K for recording, and then do a sample rate conversion down to 44.1K. What would be the best way to do this that would wind up
being the least sonically degrading to my
final 44.1K signal?

The Digi 001 doesn't do 88.1 or 96k; it supports rates up to 48kHz. Are you intending to do the conversion externally somehow before the signal goes into the 001?

Not sure that you're really going to benefit that much in this scenario. Why not just use the Rosetta at 24-bit/44.1kHz and not fool with SRC?

before entering the 001. I was wondering
how to, and with what device I should do the
sample rate conversion. I figured that
recording at 88.2, and then SRCing down
to 44.1 would give me a higher resolution
signal before entering the 001. Kind of
like some people think that recording to
48k, and SRCing to 44.1 gives a better
signal.

I think no one is happy with the quality of SR conversion!!! Just use the Rosestta a 24 bit 44.1 and you will be happy. Others can explaine why but dont get bogged down in maths, it's sound you want, the less you monkey with it the better. Record in a format that is ready for your system, otherwise you make a rod for your own back.

I passed this question along to my friend Denny Purcell at Georgetown Masters in Nashville, and this is what he passed along....hope it helps:
Sample rate conversion is tricky, but tolerable when done correctly.
I find the Pacific Microsonics Model Two to be the most precise a/d d/a that
I've found to date. It will do 192, 176.4, 96, 88.2, 48, and 44.1 and rate
convet within a family. It also has a good 48k-44.1 system and a host of
features not available on anything out there. However it's 20k.
