We really need some help here.
Just as it is difficult to move from assistant audio engineer to engineer (I used to tell my guys: "that happens when someone is willing to pay you to make their music better") it is really difficult to move from successful music engineer to music producer.
It would be great if all of you out there who have successfully accomplished this transition would share your experience with the forum.
Thanks for joining us.

Chris,
In Urban Music I'd say come up with a hot track that everybody's feeling. If they want the track bad enough they'll let you into the Production Chair. In Rock, or Country you need to find a band that's hot, and almost ready to break,& that's in the process of doing their next album while looking for a new producer. Show them your leadership qualities, as well as engineering/technical skills. Do a demo. with them that knocks everybodys socks off while initiating some sort of Artist's Developement deal, and your chances of crossing that border will be increased!

Thanks, Quantum.
Another way which seems to work according to my contacts, is for the assistant engineer to attach himself to various projects and producers/engineers. Once they get to know each other, the producer/engineer tends to give the assistant more responsibility and shares his chops. The next step is to let the assistant fill in as engineer for the simple tasks. The culmination is when he gets to engineer and the producer/engineer sits in the producer's chair and just produces.
A good example of this method is Mike Clink who got his chops from Ron Nevison, etc. and became the star producer he is today.

This is one of the more difficult jumps to make unless you grow your own talent and nurture your own groups, etc. I've passed on opportunites to work as an engineer on several records in favor of those that give me a chance to write and produce, after 10 plus years of engineering. Its a tough decision to make but if you want to produce you need to spend your time writing and producing then when folks are feeling your tracks you can say, oh by the way, you can make the engineers check out to "me" as well.

Have to agree with Quantum and Madjef best way is realize your talent and find a Band, MC, Singer etc and find some loot or spend your own (thats what seperates the men from the boys because the money spells commitment) and put a great demo together and at the same time start making contacts within the industry to get it heard. A lot of people think just because they have talent that they can produce (have you heard some of these records lately?). Apart from music, a producer has to play business man, have great organization skills, people skills, and skills enough to keep everything together when it all falls apart. Any assistant that realizes that they have those skills will make some noise...

ditto. you cant ask somebody to be anything (engineer/producer/et al), you just gotta do it. and do it a LOT. and find the BEST bands in your area, go to their shows, connect with them. spend the money and do the project yourself if you have the guts. then shop it around.
it also depends highly on what you are trying to accomplish. personally i engineer and produce the bands i work with. i prefer to work that way. for the most part i have no use for an assistant. other people tend to just get in the way. if you were looking to produce some top40 crap, i have no clue how to make the jump. i only work with ORIGINAL artists (ones who dont buy their songs and arent some prefabricated concockshun) and there are very few major label artists i would even care to work with. so i am probably no help here, my goal in doing music is to enable those who i believe in and make sure there is permenance to what they are doing.
