With the upcoming DVD-A, the talk is about 5.1, which is great when done well. But do we assume that it will be 24 bits? How about stereo DVDs at higher bit rates? Will this be done?

Thanks
Eliott

Hi Eliott:

Let's leave this here for a few days and see what kind of responses we get.

I would recommend that you also post this on the "Ask George Massenburg" forum. He is our technical/engineer/producer/manufacturer guru.

Good luck!

Chris

DVD-A is only a carrier - it doesn't assure anything about the quality of what's held within. The quality will still be determined by the creators of the recording, i.e. musicians, producers, and engineers, etc, and the committment of the label to keep that quality all the way through from session to mastering to authoring to manufacturing.

With all the great possibilities that DVD-A offers, we, as part of the creative process, need to think "hi-rez" from the beginning of the project on through. Any lapse in maintaining that chain will short-out the advantages gained with this format. The label and producers also must think along visual lines all the way through the project as well. DVD-A offers the visual aspect in addition to hi-rez audio - let's give the consumers some real value-added product that they'll really notice! 96 k stereo is really great when heard on a great system, but the difference is hardly audible on many consumer stereo systems, but surround calls attention to itself very well. Combined with well-done visuals, the surround part of DVD-A is what will sell the medium.

Best Regards;
Michael
