I may have the opportunity to work ona project in Brazil. My question is how do I make arrangements for payment. I at least know to ask for payment in US dollars.

Thanks,

Rick S.

Open ended return ticket. Wire transfer between banks, keep in touch with your bank. Get some (1/3rd , 1/2 ) before you go, some in the middle and some at the end.If the middle payment aint happening don't leave the hotel till it's sorted and go to the airport if it never gets done! Dont go over without the first payment.

Jules is right:

But, I would add, get the second payment in US Dollars AS SOON AS YOU GET THERE!!

Keep enough hidden in case they screw you with the Hotel Bill, or Plane Tickets, and you can use it to escape the Country.

Also, beware of the water and food!!

I caught amebic dysentery in Jamaica almost ten years ago, and I STILL feel the effects.

Be careful, and good luck.

2 travel tips I can pass on:

1) They will be so pleased to have you over they will take you out and get you so drunk you will spend half of 'day one' of the project on your hands & knees throwing up if you are not carefull, so watch it!

2) REMEMBER TO TAKE A FEW DAYS AT THE END TO SEE THE F**KING CITY YOU ARE WORKING IN!! You might have to pick up the hotel and exes tab for your two days of tourism but too many times I've traveled to the airport wrecked from an all nighter and only got to really see the city on that taxi ride out! The A&R co-ordinator will assume you want out of there and back home ASAP so won't think to book your flight a few days after completion.

Again I have to agree with Jules about not seeing any of the Country/State/City you are working in, especially if you ever tour!!

All you see are airports, cars, hotels, venues, cars, hotels, cars, and airports.

I went to the beach ONE day in a month in Jamaica, and spent the rest of the time in the air conditioned studio.

Any other nice place, like Colorado, where I could vaguely see the mountains in the background, through the McDonalds or Burger King strip malls, or Miami, which, luckily I've been to many times, but when working, only existed in the studio, or the beauty of Newfoundland or Quebec, the food and atmosphere of New Orleans, etc. etc., is lost on the CONSTANT pressure to work 20 hours a day to get the project finished in the blocked booked time they got so cheaply for your gig.

Spend your own money if you have to, sleep for a day, and look around the place.

It MAY be cool.

I have no idea if anywhere I ever went was nice.

Working as I do with 30 studios around the world in my World Studio Group, I can tell you that in 8 years of experience everyone has always gotten paid. Why? Because if it isn't a major company P.O confirmed and guaranteed by their U.S. office, or by the major studio where the work is being done, then it is cash in front. If they balk at giving you the money directly, get your lawyer involved and have them wire transfer it to his trust account. The client knows that if your lawyer misuses his trust account he will lose his license to practice law and that is usually enough to satisfy them. With hotels, an open credit card prior to your arrival plus per diem in advance is mandatory. There is no reason for you to be at risk in a foreign country. If you are, then the gig is probably not worth the trouble you can get into if you are on your own.
