Chris:

Welcome to these boards!!

I have been a long time admirer of yours, and an avid reader of your articles.

Since I've been Engineering and Producing for about 25 years, I've had to grow and change with the times.

One thing that always has stuck in my head, is something you said a while ago: "Diversify or Die".

It was, I believe, originally meant for Studios, but I think that statement is now imperative for ALL PERSONNEL in this business.

I, also believe that an education, whether formal, or self taught, is key to this process, and that knowledge base should extend to ALL areas. These should include Business, Legal, Music itself, Production, Engineering, Technical, etc.

Some people here are into specialization, which, I think, is fine, as long as their basic knowledge of the Business is broad based.

Could you update your thoughts on your "Diversify or Die" statement, and comment on what knowledge you think the "average" person in this business should have under their belts?

Thanks a lot, and welcome here again.

Thanks for your comments. I agree. “Diversify or Die” is another way of saying , “don’t let yourself get into the rut of being overly specialized”. Today’s version of that, to me, would be to have a broad music education, to be “at home” in music for CD’s, DVD’s, film, television, both live and studio pro audio genres, and to have a wide base of clients who want your services and say good things about you. How’s that for a dream? I wonder what Fletcher would say about that.? I will make it a point to ask him.
