There's alot of incidents but one that comes to mind is Fastball. Their breakthrough hit was recorded on a 4 tracker, with a Casio-like drum/rhythm section. Supposedly, they flew the tracks to the computer and sync'd everything up...because the Casio drum machine deal wasn't consistently in time. But what a monster song. Guided by Voices, Los Lobos, and others are famous for doing alot with a little....any others you can think of?

Ida . Parts of their album Ten Small Paces were recorded in a real recording studio, other parts were on a Walkman... and it all sounds great and serves the music perfectly, IMO.

They're not Top 40, but some of their stuff could be if there were more marketing dollars behind them.
