Iv'e been handed 2 24 track reels of unreleased material by a well known now deceased Reggae star.I have been given carte blanche to do whatever I want to to with them which means that the only thing that will survive will be the Vocal/melody,I will be rewriting all chord changes rythms ect..The Producer that gave me these tapes claims to have all rights (copyright/publishing ect.).I'm not quite sure how I go about coprighting my portion of the music.Do I need permission from the original melody writers wether they own any publishing or not?The Producer is young and not very experienced on these details and this seems to be a complicated issue.Any thoughts??

I seriously doubt that any one giving you free advice here will be willing to fight your case in court should you need to go. Hire yourself a music copyright/license attorney. If your project is for real, the investment will save you any possible grief you may encounter from getting advice from a message board.

If you need a couple of phone numbers, feel free to contact me directly.

Actually it is rather easy and you dont have to spend a fortune on an attorney. If possible, find out who actually owns the publishing or copyright. Who took over when this 'well known' passed on. You can still use your own music as co-authorship is very common even with 'remakes' or 'cover tunes'. You can expect tp pay royaltys to the actual publisher if one exists but you still have the right to publish AND copyright material if you have a part in the making of said material.

http://www.loc.gov/copyright/ This link will get you started.

Cheers

One last thing, If this producer actually 'gave' you this. Get it in writing regardless of how good a friend he is. Copyright transfer has to be done legitamately in order to do you any good. If you 'project' actually does 'take-off' you could be out every cent.

Thanks guy's,I guess the thing to do would be to get special forms from the copyright office for coauthership. The producer holds the copyrights and publishing so it's him I have to deal with.He is giving me permission to rewrite/remix and generally turn the 24 trk tapes into new product per se.I'm not sure exactly what I would get in writing from him though, written permission to change the songs perhaps? In either case I have a better idea on how to go about this. And no it's not Bob Marley but someone almost as well known in Jamaica.By the way the Artist in question only performed lead vocals and had nothing to do with songwriting/production/lyrics.
